Yeah, unironically Nelke is one of the better Atelier games made in recent years. Despite having very different gameplay.

Ryza 1 and 2 did some things well, but were quite lacking in others. Visuals were very eh, despite landscape design being much improved. Character designs are uninspired and dull, 2d cg is pretty low quality. (waterpaint style doesnt work for these games.. that would still be true if it was made by artists highly skilled at it, which is not the case)

Ryza 1's combat was weird, but pretty good once you got used to it. Then Ryza 2 completely broke it and made it unplayable at higher difficulties due to having some extreme anti-synergy with its combat systems. (getting more speed = party constantly stuck in attack animations and you cant defend or anything else, enemies/allies continue atb+attacking during controlled character's attacks, etc)

I hope there isnt a Ryza 3. I want them to go back to a cute alchemist with nice dialogue, well drawn 2d art and better character designs in general. Also having actual balance in the alchemy systems, which is something both Ryza games lacked. As result of which the combat on any normal NG difficulty is basically zero effort.

Sophie is pretty hmm, just alright to me. She's the ''safest'' pick I guess. Her character design is very standard and so is her personality. But I'd rather they put actual effort into making a good Atelier game again. Will see if Sophie 2 has that or not.

Agree. Perhaps Arland or Dusk could have gotten away with that since their writing was better. They did the slice of life stuff much better. With the current level of writing (or direction?) it just makes the game too lacking.

Lack of challenge or goal really makes the alchemy feel like a big grind too.

It's obvious they really didn't have a solid idea for a Ryza 2. Even the director of Ryza had said that sequels might not star her before 2 was announced.
