Why do I have to keep reinstalling the entire game?
Despite having 50 gigs free on the drive where the game is installed, every time this game is patched, I am informed by Steam that I don't have enough free space to download a patch indicating 11 gigs.

cause it has to unpack all data, apply the changes, and repack

that requires at least 65gb free space

Well the drive is only 111 gigs, so that's the end of the good will I reserve for this game.

where on earth did you find a drive that small?

If that is all the space you have left entirely, i hate to be your harbinger of sorrows
but it is about to get much worse and you are about to lose the good will you might have to a great number of things.

Unless you are playing on a laptop, i would suggest picking up a 2nd drive.

If funds are tight, you can get a 2TB Seagate HDD, new, for less than $40 USD
and move your stream library to the HDD

If you are on a laptop, still get the HDD, but then get an external USB 3 drive enclosure for it.
You can find those for around $9 or $10 USD

bout the cheapest way to massively expand your storage

Got free SSD and 1080ti from liquidating a crypto mine. They didn't need larger than 125 gig drives for GPU mining at the time.

I have a 120 MiB hard drive, came with my 486. They're quite common.

In 2022?
Only if you call a 486 common in 2022
(regarding a 120 MB HDD)
120 MB wont even load a modern OS except for a few tiny linux distros

It is annoying to have to reserve 100-150 GB of space for game updates on SSDs, especially given that these are expensive and typically only 2 TB at most. Of course, you can get 4 and 8 TB SSDs but the the price more than doubles that of the 2 TB drives, making them poor value for money.

It is bad enough that these updates can take ages to install without them failing part way through due to a lack of space. Steam should be checking that there is enough space for the update BEFORE starting the process; that way the user can move some games around to make space. This is how it works on consoles, .e.g. my PS5 will helpfully tell me how much additional space it requires for an update.

it's the cheapest SSD available. I use them with bays.
