I love flails too. One of my favorite weapon types.
While the western 'ball-and-chain' flail wasn't present in feudal Japan, weapons based on the same concept certainly existed; the most famous is the nunchaku. Another is the kusarigama, a kama (sickle) with a weighted chain at the end (or two kama attached at the base). Easily crafted (and disguised as) from farming implements, the wielder would use the chain to whip the enemy or entangle his weapon, then finish them with the kama. A very effective weapon for a ninja attacking an armoured samurai, to punch through his armour.
