"fILtErEd", What "FILTER"?
So I open this discussion for anyone to explain to me the nature of this "filter":

  • What is this filter?
  • Who made the filter?
  • How does this filter works?
  • How did you find out about this filter?
  • What are the sources that this filter exist?

Here is what can I say about myself:

  • I played From software games like Eternal Ring, Kings Field and Forever Kingdom so I have been enjoying their games from a long time ago
  • Finished Dark Souls 1,2 and 3
  • Finished Sekiro and beat Ishin on my first try, this being my favorite FS game in terms of fun boss design and refined gameplay
  • Finished Elden Ring base game twice and currently about to finish the DLC beating most of the bosses on my first try or second try.

Yet because I make criticism about the boss design and general gameplay (that I have been voicing from Dark Souls 3) I am being told sometimes that i am being "filtered".

So I am interested in how this works, go ahead, explain.

Filtered is Armored Core lingo, you guys don't deserve to use it.

It doesn't originate from AC but got popularized by the first boss in AC6, the HC Helicopter. It made people so mad that people got stuck on it within the first two hours and they refunded the game, acting as a filter for the playerbase.

Refunding the game = Getting filtered by the Heli. It doesn't really make sense to use it in ER, as you can't refund the game because of DLC bosses.

I cannot imagine any other functional usage of the term for Dark Souls 3 except for the first boss, and even then, only in the most extreme cases. Realistically, nobody with a single functional brain cell should use the term for DS3, as the game is piss easy.

For something like AC6's tutorial boss, however, it is applicable. That boss very much teaches you how to play, and if you can't learn the mechanics and quit, you're functionally filtered.

So for both of you:

  • What is this filter?
  • Who made the filter?
  • How does this filter works?
  • How did you find out about this filter?
  • What are the sources that this filter exist?

It's usually made of paper with a brown or white look, if bleached. There are also permanent metal filters, that don't need to be disposed of as soon as you're done brewing coffee.

No idea, but it was probably some machine at Hario.

You get a handbrewer of your choice, put it on a nice cup, put the filter into the handbrewer and fill it with coffee grounds. Then, boil some water, following a circular spiral like motion from the inside outwards, pour half of the water over the coffee grounds. Wait for the first half to filtrate all of that coffee goodness out of the coffee grounds and then, following the same motion as described above, pour the second half of still hot water over the grounds

I was browsing for hand brewers and eventually, Hario would catch my eye. No idea why though, I guess I like the design of their hand brewers.

There you go:

Admitting to have no grounds can be hard if you really crave a good cup of coffee. I usually buy mine online, which takes several days to arrive. It's always good to have a batch of back up coffee grounds, so you never go without it!

edit: fixed a typo

So when the fanatics are put on the spot and asked about this filter to give actual arguments and logical discourse about this narrative they can't do it?

One would think that the people that put themselves on a pedestal above everybody else because of how "badass hardcore" they are wouldn't chicken this easily from a conversation.

A filter is a device that prevents certain things from passing through. In this context, it refers to something filtering out bad players.

The question is too vague, with many possible answers, such as "the person who designed the boss" or "Miyazaki himself."

When a boss, also known as the filter, is too mentally taxing for a player to defeat, leading them to quit or even refund the game, they are being filtered out by that boss.

The Steam discussions are filled with complaints about the AC6 tutorial boss, illustrating a basic understanding of the term "filter" used in this somewhat unorthodox context.

The AC6 tutorial boss and Balteus are prime examples of such filters. This concept can also be loosely applied to other bosses, like the DS3 tutorial boss.

So where are your sources that From software actively made this filters and that they seek to filter this players? also on what purpose?
