Kick was almost entirely worthless.
Nobody had problems with the kick as a move or with its use cases, they just hated it because it made it so easy to misinput and die.
If they could bring it back while avoiding that problem it'd be great, but I do think taking it off if they couldn't was the right call.
And when used correctly and skillfully you can deal with any shielded opponent very easily, since more often than not guard-breaking them sets up for riposite.
