If you dont know where to go, the rays of guiding light will show you where to go to advance the main story and will lead you to most of the shard bearers (main bosses) you will encounter during the game.
Then there still is a ton of places to explore.
To know what items do, where they need to go, and how to use them, pay attention to how they are labelled in your inventory.
Finally, multiplayer matchmaking is based off your Rune Level and Weapon Upgrade Level. Your level and weapon level need to be in range of similar players for them to find you. Lastly, the red sign is for competitive PvP, so very little people are going to summon you to fight. If you want Co-op, use the Furl Curling Finger Remedy to find other people's gold summon signs, or use your own Furl Curling Finger item to place your own gold sign down to be summoned by other players.
If the lack of information is causing serious problems for your enjoyment of the game, I highly recommend looking up spoiler free guides on game mechanics, and recommended paths to take on the map.
