Best shield with no active skill
Hey guys. This is my first post on this forum. I'm currently looking for the shield with the best damage negation stats that doesn't come with an active skill. The reason being is that I want to use the active skill of my right-handed weapon without having to remove my left-handed shield to do so. Right now I'm using the Golden Beast Crest Shield which has decent damage negation, but I feel like there's got to be something better out there. Preferably with something with improved magic negation that still has 100 physical negation and decent guard boost. Any ideas? All help is welcome!

paradoxally, the golden medium shield dropped by most of the common knights in limgrave.

Are you talking about the Brass shield? I have that one as well, but it has the exact same physical/magic negation but less lightning/holy/guardboost stats. I was using that one previous to my current shield. Thank you for your input though!

There is a Golden Round Shield (a great shield) that has the physical damage mitigation and the guard boost mostly covered. Although could benefit from using the guard boost accessory.

Endgame bosses can still apply too much pressure on you though.

And then off hand, I think the other ones that I liked stat-wise had a skill attached to it / and where not standard shields.

Fingerprint greatshield is the best shield in game with negation and guard boost, right on ash of war you can look up where to find the "no skill" one for shield and put it on it, i think it had bash as default though

I would also say the Brass Shield. Super low strength investment. Great guard boost, 100% phys and ou get it right at the very first camp you encounter.

You can apply 'no skill' skill on Shields with skill on Blacksmith at the Roundtable.

You can buy the it from the Warmaster shack.

You can use any shield with the "no skill ash" attached.

Which shield you can effectively use, depends on the weight, you can handle. There are many good great shields dropped by the knights.
The best one, (best weight / stats ratio) I have, is the "Eclipse Crest Greatshield". It's dropped by "Mausoleum Knights" in Liurnia.

For medium shields, the brass shields dropped by standard soldiers in limegrave. Has the highest stability of all the medium shields IE, the best blocking ability for stamina reduction purposes.

By the way, you can get the "no skill" ashes of war, and put that on any shield you want.

Turtleshield. You can remove its skill and it increases stamina reg

My recommendations based on personal experience (using all No Skill).

Best Starter: Brass Shield
-Pros:
  • Hella easy to get in game's 1st area.
  • 100% physical negation.
  • Comes with No Skill.
-Cons:
  • Heavy as ♥♥♥♥ for a medium shield (7). Better off putting that weight elsewhere.
  • High STR requirement for early game (16) unless you're a STR build.

Best Med. Shield: Inverted Hawk Heater Shield
-Pros:
  • Relatively easy to find early on (Mistwood area access).
  • 100% physical negation.
  • Low STR requirement (10).
  • Respectable weight (3.5).
-Cons:
  • Comes with Parry (will need the "No Skill" ash of war).
  • Will need to be upgraded a couple levels to replace your Brass Shield, but ultimately worth it.

Best (Non-Golden) Greatshield: Eclipse Crest Greatshield
-Pros:
  • 100% physical negation.
  • Whopping 72% magic negation.
  • Comes with No Skill.
  • Relatively easy (skill wise) to farm from 1 headless knight right by a Grace Site.
  • Amazing passive: raises Immunity, Robustness, and Focus by 50 each.
-Cons:
  • Greatshield weight (15).
  • Might take some time to farm from 1 headless knight due to drop rates.
  • High STR requirement (32).

Two Maidens in Roundtable Hold sells a great medium shield with 100% phys reduction, and its pretty light too. But youll have to apply the no skill ash to it.

the best shield is fingerprint stone shield. its pretty much the new havels shield. if you combine with guardboost charm at +25 you wont lose stamina on block anymore. yes ZERO STAMINA loss aka infinite blocking. found in the hidden area behind mogh the omen (not the lord of blood) in subterran shuning grounds below the capital. its guarded by the mightiest souls enemy : gravity. so be careful.

requires 48 str tough and is hella heavy.

it can be slotted with the empty ash allowing free use of mainhand weapon ashes.

brass shield is best medium shield (nerf inc as this is stupid that the first medium shield outperforms all others is just plain wrong)

please learn what the best is really. the eclipse gs is not nearly as strong as fingerprint gs. its not even close.

brass shield is flat out better than inverted hawk and will stay better. 3.5 weight dont justify the weaker shield. shields are all about guardboost. if that value sucks itll never be good. and brass has by far the highest guardboost in the whole game for medium shields. its kinda silly.

the overall best shield is fingerprint shield tough. 100% phys and 80% againist everything else. and well 90 guardboost is unmatched. and given you can get to 100 makes it absolutly broken.

I've seen a lot of people saying that I can attach the No Skill Ash of War to any shield, but I've tried this with the Erdtree Greatshield and with the Dragonclaw (just because it looks cool) and the shields don't show up as an option at the blacksmith. I have a whetstone blade to switch the ashes as well, but nothing. All other shields that don't come with and ash show up. Not sure why.
