DEATH STRANDING

DEATH STRANDING

Where is nvidia DSR (downsampling) support? Please implement it.
I play on 1080p plasma screen and I have RTX2080Ti. The reason I have this card is because image quality is much higher when downsampling from 4K to 1080p that my screen displays. In nVidia control panel, you can enable DSR (dynamic super resolution as they call it), which then lets you select even 4K res on your 1080p screen and get much higher image quality.

And despite having DSR enabled, in the Death Stranding menu the max resolution I can select is pitiful 1080p.

I had same issue in Control, but there I could edit ini file and set the 4K resolution for proper downsampling.

In DS, I found the ini file but resolution is not set there, apparently.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Or Kojipro, please implement normal DSR support (hell, every game supports it normally without any input from developers. So you actually had to break something to make it not work!)

Thank you.

DRS is obsolete as well. With flip model, you can use hardware scalers to accomplish the same thing. Developers don't bother to read the documentation, sadly.

I am also having the same problem. The game is very light which would allow you to easily put it in 4k. But the option simply does not appear in the graphical configuration menu. Several current games allow this and therefore the one that is extremely optimized is not allowing it.
@paul, what drivers do you use where DSR is enabled?

I cannot find the life of me finding a recent driver with that option, it seemed they just removed it or something.

So i was wondering what you use, so i can search for that driver.
I have the same problem, but i managed it with a batch file.
(i hate it to ever chanche my res manual if i want to play)

i use "NirCMD" for that...download: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html
(scroll all down 4 dl)

my batch(DeathStrandingDSR.bat) look like this:
------------------------------------------------
d:
cd D:\Neuer_Ordner\NirCMD
nircmd setdisplay monitor:0 2560 1440 32 60
e:
cd E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Death Stranding
start /wait ds.exe
pause
d:
cd D:\Neuer_Ordner\NirCMD
nircmd setdisplay monitor:0 1920 1080 32 60
------------------------------------------------

My Nircmd is at "D:\Neuer_Ordner\NirCMD", DS is at "E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Death Stranding", so my different locations.
Normally the "start /wait" command should be enough, but here i must use "pause".

I start this batch, then resolution is chanching to 2560x1440 and game starts, if i close the game i only must press a key and all is original. ;-)

...but right, exclusive fullscreen would be better!

(p.s. start Steam before that batch file!)

I use the latest drivers provided by nvidia via Geforce experience. Version 451.67

Could you elaborate what this means, please?

For DSR to work in this game (as well as several other modern DX12 games, Metro Exodus and Control are problematic as well), you need to set your desktop resolution to your wanted DSR resolution *before* launching the game.

This is quite cumbersome, therefore I came up with the following automated solution:

- Download a tool called ChangeScreenResolution from here:
https://tools.taubenkorb.at/change-screen-resolution/

- Place this tool in a directory on your hard disk

- Create a batch file (e.g. called start.bat) in the game’s directory; add the following lines of code:

@ECHO OFF SET varExecName="ds.exe" SET varToolPath="C:\Program Files (x86)\ChangeScreenRes\ChangeScreenResolution.exe" %varToolPath% /w=3840 /h=2160 /f=144 /d=0 START /MIN /B "" "steam://rungameid/1190460" :waitstart tasklist | find /I /N %varExecName% > NUL IF NOT "%ERRORLEVEL%"=="0" GOTO waitstart :waitfinish tasklist | find /I /N %varExecName% > NUL IF "%ERRORLEVEL%"=="0" GOTO waitfinish %varToolPath% /w=1920 /h=1080 /f=144 /d=0

From now on, start the game through this batch file.
It will change the resolution to 3840x2160, launch Death Stranding alongside Steam and then when you close the game it will revert the resolution back to 1920x1080.

Of course you need to tweak parameters varToolPath, w, h, f to mach your system/requirements.

Thank you! It's working fine! Although I'd like they implement it ingame, but meanwhile it's the best solution.

The problem is caused by the lack of true exclusive fullscreen (like all DX12-games). You have to set your desktop to the DSR resolution before starting the game, then you can select it in game.

Thank you for info. Does anyone know WHY DX12 does not have proper fullscreen? It is so damn stupid!

I mean having to change desktop res every time I want to play is so unnecessarily annoying and dumb. If MS or developers do not fix it, I wish nVidia would, somehow.
its just the weird way DX12 works, it breaks most screen overlays.

Great :D

Though I wouldn't count on Kojima Productions to ever fix this behavior. Most developers seem to treat DSR and non-standard resolutions as an afterthought.

Oh well, the beauty of pc gaming is that you can come up with a quirky workaround and still get what you want...

I feel like this is something that developers should really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ address though. Downsampling is not some obscure arcane thing, lot of PC gamers use it...hell many games offer resolution scaling as graphical option directly in the menu. And for those that dont, DSR it is.

Although even when game offers scaling natively, I still prefer to use DSR over ingame scaling because when recording my gameplay in shadowplay, I get it recorded in 4K which results in much higher bitrate and quality on youtube compared to footage recorded in 1080p.

Works great. I can finally play at 4K with DLSS without any graphical artifacts/ghosting on my 1080p ultrawide screen. Looks great, no aliasing and sharpest possible image.

Keep on keeping on!

It means that developers more familiar with Windows know the correct way to implement this on modern versions of Windows that doesn't involve proprietary driver hacks.

These guys have never made a Windows game before, and it shows. Now you're all mildly irritated that you have to use a driver hack for resolution scaling and it's not working conveniently. But the driver hack has been obsolete for quite some time, and is why it's not a polished experience :-\
Bumpity bump
Alternatively they should just implement a render scale instead, there is no need to deal with exclusive full screen and it is much easier both on devs and users.
IO Interactive added support for DirectX 12 exclusive fullscreen in november 2016 patch for HITMAN with their in-house engine, and for HITMAN 2 as well 2 years later, so it's entirely up to the developers to add the support along with DX12 (in accordance with the limitations of their engine of course).

These things require time, DX12 is pretty new for most game devs (less than 2 years mostly), very few studios have been using it since 2015-2016. Decima engine is really promising for a first version. Guerrilla/Kojima Prod just need time to add some new cool features :)
