Use cover, take the high ground, make sure to keep your shields up, learn to move fast and slide/wall jump, improve your aim in firing grounds.

You _will_ be able to hear footsteps, but only if there are not 64 other sound sources going off in your vicinity. Only lemmings who drop hot into the middle of 10 other squads are complaining about not hearing footsteps.

Start with playing Control and TDM modes. It is easier to familiarize yourself with movements, weapons and legends abilities.
Don't spend too much time trying to learn some complicated movements or recoil patterns because it is a waste of time. All those fancy movements and perfect aims you see around are done using aim-assist and all kinds of scripts/cheats, this game being dominated by controller players and cheaters. The only way to compete with them is to play smart.
Learn the maps, legend abilities and the basic movements and stick with the legend and weapons you feel better.
Do your best to cooperate with your team (there is a good ping system).
Pick your fights wisely.
If it is possible, play with friends in BR mode. Playing with randoms is 4 of 5 matches a bad experience.

The whole gimmick is that the servers suck, theres no anti-cheat, and everyone is smurphing or playing from a half a continent away
Then when its hard everyone tell you that you suck so that you have to keep playing
