Estate lost - Celestial government
I was playing as a noble house under Celestial government. After reaching the minister of Finances position and securing governorships for all my male children my character passed away peacefully. After succession I realised my fully upgraded estate was completely wiped and reset.

I understand that my primary heir, because he was a governor, must have created his own estate which overrode my upgraded estate but is this really intended? In Celestial government your only genuine progress comes from your estate, so for it to be wiped every time your heir happens to have a governorship is quite unfortunate.

Was your heir from your house? Because that shouldn't have happened. Only house heads should get estates, and your heir shouldn't be able to create a cadet house, given that the decision requires not being in line to inherit leadership, which is why they usually only start getting created when the previous leader dies and the current head's siblings then qualify to create their own.
Heir was of my house, not a cadet house. I gave him a governorship before dying, upon succession my entire estate reset.

Strange. I can't recall anything like this ever happening to me playing with any of the admin-esque estate governments. Any mods?
Hmm, I do have 8 minor mods running. None which should, in theory, cause such an issue. But you never know. I'll try a run in the future with a clean game without mods, perhaps that fixes it.
