Can't sell ammo?
So I recently returned to FO76 after not playing for a few months, and my stash box is full. I took all the ammo out, and I schlepped it off to the vendor, thinking I could sell it and clear out some room in my box. No dice.

I main a melee character. I have no need for ammo, yet I have thousands of rounds I apparently can't do anything with. Am I doing something wrong, or can I do something with it and just haven't figured it out yet.

TYVM.

This is a game with literal bat dragons and super mutants with plasma miniguns. You SURE you don't want to pack a sidearm?

First, easy stuff, Mini Nukes, Missles, and 40mm Grenades weigh a ton. Plasma and Fusion Cores too, but I think they feed power armor. I don't run power armor but you might want one of those types even though they're under ammo.

There's two options to deal with this. One, you can use the ammo converter to feed it ammo to convert to points which... can only be used to buy different ammo. But if you ever decide to splash guns you can then liquidate the points into any ammo type you desire. Otherwise, zero benefit but you have turned the space-wasting ammo into weightless points.

Otherwise, you're gonna have to sell it to players. Build a vendor in your camp, connect it to power, and dump the ammo in there. Price it at 1cap per round (I think the 2mm EC you could price a bit higher but it's also easy to make so don't get greedy) and see if you can liquidate any of it. It still takes up room in your stash though.

Failing all that, you can just leave it as a donation. The train station at the starter town or near Whitesprings, or southeast robo town are all common places where people toss their excess trash. Most of the time they dump it in some really obvious luggage near the counter or entrance. It won't get you anything but it might make someone else on the server happy.

Some ppl "sell" ammo at their CAMPs for 0 caps. Anyways, at 1 caps per shot some ppl might buy those (desperate need of ammo, cap limit so need to buy at least ANYTHING, or "buy something from other ppl 0/3" daily), but its cheaper to make ammo by yourself even if purchace mats. If its not ultracite ammo, of course, which require flux.

Fusion core is PA and laser gatling. Plasma core is used only by plasma gatling as far as i know (sorry this lvl130 noob if he's wrong). Problem with cores is greed. Those weight a lot, but its kinda sad to drop 30/100, 50/100, 80/100 core... even if i have ~20 full 100/100 cores among those.

Just to add a little something to what Shakesman said:
You get the Ammo Converter by playing the current season.
It is a very, very early reward. You should be able to get it with your first set of dailies and weeklies. Should take maybe an hour or two of game time. Just don't put it off too long, as the season seems to be slowly winding down over the next week or two.
Also, Shotgun ammo tends to sell well, as does .308. Set up closer to the left side of the map, where people who can't make all the ammo they could ever want any time they want tend to hang out. It might not all go in a day, but I once had a player buy 3000 Shotgun Shells from me at once.

i had 15 cores, even with the perk for more use of them i ran out. 1 left.

ill buy all your 308 at 0.25 cap each
TL DR
can only sell ammo to other players via your trade station
but i recommend not selling

i suggest
converting ammo to what you would use.
presuming your melee char to have high str stat?
i suggest taking explosives.

(shotgun is nice too but i simply enjoy watching ghouls flying about teh room)

Ordindance Express + demolition expert + fire in the hole

i find explosives pair extremely well with my ninja and slugger.
i play ninja differently than my slugger, but both use "throwables"

you can use it with fat man, missile launcher, grenade launcher, grenades and mines.
synergy with "explosive" weapon affects.
you can even find "explosive melee weapons"

i prefer the grenade launcher because it functions more like a homing missile when used from V.A.T.S
weighs less than the missile launcher or fatman...

Strategy:
simply use the ammo converter to make your mininukes/missiles/40mm

make so much that you cant carry it all, then only sell the ammo type that you use.
you will always have the ammo pool and potentially make money at the same time.

i dont dedicate my stash space to selling ammo i dont use.
prioritize.

i have gatling lazer on my melecharacter just burn fusion cores.. not sure why OP doesnt have a sidearm.. mele is king but some times u need to pull your ranged weapons too..
yah, Laser Gat is how i use up cores.

the problem with trying to sell "ammo" of any kind especially cores is that it isnt consistant at all.
all ammo even if described as "uncommon" are actually abundant -> when farmed/grinding.

*mini rant*
the only reason somebody might bust through 6000 rounds of 5.56m is that they cant aim/only use vats
stop rewarding these types of players by selling ammo for 1cap each.
maybe 10mm or .38 or arrows.... but people gotta stop selling 5.56 for so cheap.
*mini rant over*

so i find myself simply blasting cores out of a laser gat.... because simply dropping it on the ground would be wasteful.
and you cant convert cores... so good job bethesda.

just a bunch of bottlenecks for players to meander.

No, not to an NPC vendor.
But, you can sell ammo to players via that trading box that tax's everyone somehow.
