Linux support?
I love all the Supergiant games, and I'm hoping for a Linux release for Hades too! :bpenguin:

That said, we expect to bring Hades to more platforms once Early Access is complete sometime in the second half of next year. We haven't decided on all those platforms yet, though we're thinking about Linux among the possibilities, and appreciate your interest. We've been pleased to be able to support Linux on Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre before this, so it's good to hear from you on Hades as well!

Wow. Your previous games, all of which I've bought and loved, had native Linux versions. Super disappointed to read that Hades won't run natively on Linux.

This is ENORMOUSLY disappointing. Too many developers who once supported Linux users are turning their backs on them now. Capybara, Hopoo, and now Supergiant. I'd expected more.

I understand your disappointment, and that you expected more from us. Nevertheless, we have never promised that the game would come to any specific platforms, and we always said we would make those decisions later. If my previous post in this thread raised your hopes and gave the impression that this was a sure thing, that is my fault and on me; I apologize.

As stated, the game should be playable using Proton without any special configuration necessary. Multiple users on ProtonDB report the game runs flawlessly that way.

I am also greatly disappointed for the same reasons others have stated. But I will also say that I do not feel misled.

I would add Coffee Stain (Goat simulator and Satisfactory) to the list. It seems like almost any developer who does any kind of deal with Epic sours on Linux. :-( All the more reason to despise Epic.

What on earth does Epic have to do with this beyond your own confirmation bias

There was no miscommunication, but this is incredibly disappointing. Hopefully you'll reconsider platform support when the game goes gold. I own the entire Supergiant back catalogue, but I rarely buy Proton-based games

If you ever show up in Humble Choice, I might get to play Hades. Fingers crossed.

Also just wanted to express my immense disappointment on no Linux support for Hades :(. I don't go out of my way to buy Windows games, to run through a compatibility layer and not actually be supported by really anyone.

It's a massive disappointment that I will not be able to complete my Supergiant Games collection. I have absolutely loved every single game up until this point, with multiple playthroughs in each one. But I am not going to be picking up Windows games just to complete that collection. Hopefully the game will eventually come to Linux, but until then I'll pass.

The programmer who knew their way around Linux probably no longer works there. Instead of hiring Ryan "Icculus" Gordon for a few days work (or better yet, booking him for free--he does that now I hear), it's easier just to say "Proton works fine" as an attempt of mollifying Linux backers without actually offering any official support.

Proton is great, but it should never be seen as a replacement for native ports. Especially for devs/publishers with a long history of supporting Linux in previous titles, the expectation sort of builds in that direction. I can't blame one for being disappointed. I surely am.

For what it's worth, thanks for Bastion; it was an epic ride.

well, there goes -1 developer from my list. Loved previous games tho - own them all both there and on gog

Disappointing news! Love and own all your previous games on Linux, but until there is a native Linux port I'll pass. Fingers crossed that it will still happen in the future and it will be an instant buy.

Another disappointed Linux gamer here. I also have all your other games and counted Supergiant among the Good Guy Developers who cared about us. Transistor was such an excellent and beautiful game. I still think about it from time to time, just remembering the goodness.

You must understand that we're not disappointed in a perceived broken promise, as one was never made.
We are disappointed that you stringed us along with a vague and non-committal 'maybe' statements in the form of "We plan to bring Hades to other platforms" and "We've been pleased to be able to support Linux on Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre before this, so it's good to hear from you on Hades as well!" etc.

I appreciate that the game runs in Proton, but that's a last resort FOR US, NOT YOU.

I resisted posting here as I don't really want to add negativity to what is essentially you simply stating a fact, but I felt it was necessary. You used to be a Good Guy Dev, one of us, on our side, a friend and ally. It hurts.
So I offer you a suggestion:

Maybe you would like to step up and officially support Hades for Linux when running in Proton? That would be very much appreciated as a compromise.

That is too bad... That said, it does work with proton in my very limited test.

That said, since I have RTX cards in all my home rigs, I really haven't been able to break away from Windows. But games that are great for the hotel room, I pretty much exclusively run on Linux. If there's no hardware that absolutely requires something, that is still my preference.

Just one request then; if you don't go and natively support, would you guys at least want to test if updates don't break stuff on Proton?

I get how that wouldn't be any priority either, but having it at least included in an e-2-e test to see if it starts, the menu and input works, sounds play back etc, would already be a good thing.

Thanks for being transparant about it.

Also disappointed, but FWIW I've been playing the game with Proton since December with only a handful of issues. Performance improved a lot with Proton 5, though it's unclear what the performance (in terms of bugs) will look like with Proton if SG releases the "native code" version on Steam. On one hand I don't blame SG for dropping official support for this title since it would mean committing more resources to playtesting, but Linux has to be a first-class platform for gaming in the long-run for a myriad of reasons as many of the posters here are aware. Shame to see the ball dropped.

Oh well, kudos to the Proton team for at least providing a working solution even if it isn't ideal. It's kind of nuts that Proton has better compatibility for some older Windows games than Windows 10 does.

It's one thing to be (rightfully) disappointed that Hades won't have a Linux launch, but it's pretty overdramatic to post things like "You used to be a Good Guy Dev, one of us, on our side, a friend and ally" like Greg personally came and kicked your dog or something. Transistor actually didn't launch with a Linux port, that came months later. Who's to say Hades won't see similar? It's too early to act like it's never happening.
