The WH3 campaign sucks. The WH2 campaign isn't great either, but is a lot better. Plus you should be able to get WH2 for 50% off at a minimum.
Immortal Empires is good, but that's the campaign for all 3 games combined, so you can't play it unless you own all 3 games. Hence why I'd recommend the cheaper WH2 to start with. If you like that then you can pick up WH1 (probably 80% off) and WH3 (maybe 20% off) on sale in the future.
Ontop of that, this game does allow you to play campaign with more then one friend which no other game does in the Total war franchise.
That being said the best entry point would be either tww 1 or 3 simply because you can grab them on sale for like 15€.
If money is not a problem and you're interested in the factions present in tww3 then yes it would be the best entry as it also as an extensive narrated tutorial in the form of a prologue to the main campaign.
wish there were more such engaging strategy game.
I wanna give a little bit of my story with this game:
Two years ago I watched both hobbit and Lotr trilogies and I was hungry for more content like that.
I noticed that I had Total War Warhammer 2 in my library and it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.
I played the Vortex campaign, I liked the gameplay, the style, I was amazed by the lore that grew on me more and more as I Iearned about it.
I loved the songs, the themes. I loved everything.
I was completely sold at that point, then I heard about the Mortal Empires.
Man, I didn't even think twice, just bought every and single DLC for both warhammer 1 and 2. I regret nothing!
the game is not perfect and it will never be, but certainly was one of the best things that I found in the past 2 years.
If I'd compare how much fun I had with Vs the price paid, I would say they are very cheap.
Well, that's it. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do.
I'd say get one of the older ones on sale and see how you like it.
Also if you're looking to get into Total War and learn, then the Warhammer games are a terrible choice for that. They have a higher learning curve than the other Total War games because they have magic, which takes some getting used to, and, especially the second and third games, have introduced loads of unique mechanics for every faction.
If you want to get into Total War you're better off going with one of the historical games released after 2013, as they are the ones where the modern Total War game mechanics were introduced (so no Shogun 2). You could always get Warhammer 3 or any of the Warhammer games, but just know that it's going to take sometime and a few restarts to figure things out first and get a handle on your faction's mechanics, especially if you go with a highly unique faction with that's highly specialized into a certain playstyle (like the demon factions). You can go for it but just have some patience going in.
Also forgot to mention that Warhammer 3 has a tutorial unlike the other two games.
Would recommend starting with Rome 2 or Shogun 2 first since they're easier for new players to get into.
3 is the only which got a tutorial and some qol stuff like move in any stance instead of switching out, hoping you didn't missguess and reentering a stance like encampment.
Or diplomacy quick deal, straight showing which faction accepts what deal.
It certainly lacks some polish, even more in immortal empires.
