I prefer the new cleaner campaign map artstyle over the older ones, the actual battles are a bit different though. Some things look better in WH3, others in the predecessors. It would be great if they hadn't removed a lot of the post processing and I hope they fix the old / reused models with the release of IE.
Even though I like most of the new colourful additions, it's definitely a missed opportunity that they didn't include Three Kingdoms Post Effects setting. People can choose if they like more vibrant colours, or a more washed out darker look like in the previous games. Problem solved with a "simple" addition under the graphics options.

I have to admit I my have spoiled my perception of WH3 with your mod, because I haven't seen vanilla WH2 maps in ages. But even if you had the perfect light and ambience in WH3, there is still that weird blurry distance effect (that looks super bad in screenshots, imo) that is not even possible to disable without also disabling shadows (as in Shadows = off) and fog. And then there is that weird HDR (over?)glow effect that happens at certain camera angles....
To me there is nothing beautiful I would want to screenshot in WH3 and maybe another part of that is the .. sorry the language, but bloody awful corruption effect. I played Demon Prince domination, 90% of my maps looked like someone had painted purple, green or red all over them. Even when I was going way south in the badlands everything had tint to it because I was spreading like +80 corruption combined per turn so even just approaching something slower turned my maps .. weird.

tww 3 art style is more for warcraft.
I see a lot of people talk about new graphics, when in essence, they changed the lighting, added some bloom and shadow tech.
Pretty much.
That isn't a small change. It's what made it necessary for CA to alter the textures on WH1 models in WH2, because they wouldn't have been a good fit in the WH2 lighting system. Those models look far more detailed in WH1, because their original subtle colour tones get saturated in the WH2 lighting system.
The only improvement of the WH2 lighting system was there no longer being that ugly blue-tint to dark areas and fog, so Underway battles actually started looking somewhat like when they were first showcased for WH1. A lot of people still mistook the over-brightness and colour-saturation in WH2 for a bug that CA would fix, yet they never did.
Minus the post processing effects and (some) reused / recoloured models are worse than before.
EDIT: LOD is also worse than ever before.
That could be the reason why the oldest game in the trilogy has the worst performance. When zooming right into the heat of battle the fps can drop to below 40 fps, while WH3 usually stays above 80 fps all the time. I wonder how that changes once the old races with shinier armor affect the screen space reflections a lot more and blood is enabled.
