Outside master mode or the newest raids such as Vow of the Disciple in Witch Queen or the new one in a couple weeks the power level isn't as important as it used to be just find some guides for good weapon combinations and you're good to go for last wish, garden of salvation, deepstone crypt, or vault of glass. A popular and easy to get combo since Witch Queen has been "Izanagi rocket" with the new Palmyra-B rocket launcher that you can craft to have auto-loading and izanagi exotic sniper rifle (need to complete the exotic catalyst) from year 2 exotic weapon kiosk (requires forsaken), example: https://youtu.be/-K2vreYKbGM
Don't fill your vault with trash you're never going to use.
Don't obsess on armor stats when you're still learning to game, there is plenty of time to do that later especially as you get higher stat gear from end game.

PvP tip:
Avoid it while you're new/learning the game.
Real PvP tip:
I know this will seem like a "no ♥♥♥♥" tip but landing your shots in the most important thing. People often worry too much about having perfect armor stats and mods/perks or having the best god roll weapons but none of that will help if you can't land your shots.
Also something I heard someone mention which I never thought about because it was always how I played and thought everyone did the same thing and it might sound strange at first but do not look at your weapon's reticle or crosshair, instead you should always try to be looking at your enemies past the gun and use your "peripheral" vision and motion to try and line up the reticle with the enemy you're looking at. If you spend too much time looking at your gun and reticle then you're not watching the enemy to react to them.
Damn man, I came here with the same question as the post and your reply is fantastic. I sure appreciate the hell out of you taking the time to put all this out, you're definitely helping more than one person with this. Cheers buddy!
