AM I BEING FORCED TO PURCHASE THE DLC?
so i haven't play D2 since it first came out. i bought it on xbox and thoroughly enjoyed playing it. i stopped playing up until today when i decided to download it for free. i noticed it is different from the D2 i remember. i was able to complete a few campaign missions and now i see no more campaign missions to do. iv'e checked every landing i can possibly go to multiple times to look for a campaign mission and NOTHING. So i'm starting to wonder if i'm being forced to buy one of the dlc's to be able to continue a story?

But to strictly answer your question the story has always been buy to play, there was 1 year where year 1 campaigns were free but those were cut out of the game with the launch of Beyond Light and Year 4. So yes Shadowkeep and Beyond Light require you to buy them but Forsaken has been made temporarily free until it gets cut when Witch Queen launches with Year 5.

What could you play back then without buying something, nothing?
GforTwenty Jan 30, 2022 @ 10:24pm
@trukr i'm not sure what you mean but like i said i purchased D2 when it was first released. there was no expansions or dlc it was just original D2 content. Once i beat the campaign and i grinded the game out and all my friends stopped playing i lost interest in the game and stopped paying attention to it. I heard talks of them adding an expansion in the future before i stopped playing but like i said i grinded the game out and lost interest in it so stopped paying attention to it. So when i saw that the game was free i was expecting to still be able to play the original content with the option of purchasing whatever dlc they have added since then. I had no idea that they completely removed the D2 campaign i knew from the game and replaced it with the new expansions which you have to buy. so i guess i was expecting all of the original content from first release to be playable for free still and then have the option to buy expansions if you wish.

No, you're not "forced" to buy anything.

That said, only the bare minimum basics are available to FTP players. You can do the bounties, the patrols, the destination bounties and the basic playlists.

If you want the stories and the Seasonal Activities, then yes, you need to purchase (access to) them.

The older campaigns that were FTP have been vaulted, and are no longer available. With the release of Beyond Light, Bungie scaled back the amount of content available to non-paying customers.

When the game was moved to Steam, Red War, Curse of Osiris and War Mind were free to play, for over a year. they were then removed. Maybe you should have came back two years ago when that content was free to play.

The point I was making is, you had to buy the game to play at all, there was no free to play. Now the game has free to play content with the option to buy expansions and seasons. You're not being forced to buy anything, it's your choice.

No, I did not contradict myself. Nothing forces you to spend money. It is a choice.

If you desire to play the game to its fullest, then yes, you will need to spend some money. But the key words are "if" and "desire".

don't lie to the guy, pretty false with this whole "you don't HAVE to pay-" yes you do. if you want to access anything other than the same boring strikes over and over again then yes you MUST pay or else you'll always be at a disadvantage. Hell you also failed to bring up bungie forcing you to pay 80$ for overpriced trash just to access dungeons lmao.

Not lying, no one is forcing anyone to buy anything. You might want to study up on what force means. Sure, you need to buy something to get access to it, but no one if forcing anyone to do so, not even forcing anyone to play the game. Go play victim elsewhere, it's become tiresome.

Dungeons will be purchasable by themselves.

There is no forcing you to pay for content; you don't have a gun to your head telling you to pay or else, do you? You can actively choose not to buy it if you do not think it is worth it.

F2P players have access to all of the following besides "boring strikes":
  • All destination locations.
  • Year 1/Reissued Nightfalls
  • Crucible
  • Iron Banner
  • Gambit
  • Prophecy Dungeon
  • Vault of Glass Raid

There are also tons of good gear that are free to get, some of those being the old TotN weapons (Prophecy), Vault of Glass weapons, Nightfall exclusive weapons, etc. Hell, Xur straight up sold a Trials of Osiris weapon to everyone not too long ago, implying that free players can even get old endgame loot if it rotates into Xur's stock.

The only thing that forces you, or anyone else, to buy something is FOMO. Which of course is controlled, or not, by the purchasers will power

alright boys settle down. i think my choice of the word "forced" was misused. of course i know i am not forced to buy the dlc and it is 100% my choice to do so. when i asked if im being forced to buy the dlc i mean't do i need to buy dlc to play an actual campaign/story. My decision to use the word "forced" came from me being bummed out when i started realizing that i can no longer continue a story without purchasing dlc. like i said i had no idea yet that they had completely removed the original campaign. I was expecting all original D2 to be free to play from when it first released and then all the dlc to be available to buy if i wished. i think some people took the word "forced" a little too seriously. No there is not somebody holding a gun to my head making me buy but what i was trying to get at is they completely removed their original campaign to push people to buy their DLC. yes i understand their is still content for free if you don't want to purchase it but lets be honest they kinda suck...so removing the original story, making it free to play, but only making it worth while if you buy their dlc is why i said being forced. From the perspective of someone who played the game when it first released, stopped playing for however many years, seeing its now free to play but not knowing they cut out the original story and the only campaigns available to play require a purchase of dlc.. well maybe im not "forced" to buy it but im definitely pushed to purchase it if i want to have any actual fun. anyways thanks for all your comments i got what i needed out of them.

The red war etc was not free to play until in released on Steam. The Red War, Curse of Osiris and War mind were free to play for over a year. On BNet you had to buy the game to play the game, I never got to play Red War, Curse of Osiris and War Mind until it moved to Steam because I only bought Forsaken. I have bought every expansion from Forsaken forward including Witch Queen, so excuse me if I don't feel bad for you because you are expected to buy content to use it.

Wait so what do you even do in the free version of this game? So buying 50 campaign dlc expansions is required to get anything out of this game?

The answer to your question is literally the first response in the thread. The OP even marked it as answering the question:
