As for actual play, know how the enemies behave and react accordingly. Those hammer guys should be engaged at range at all times, just to start.

When using Calamity Cannon, you just stand on the edge of the level behind some stone pillar and spam it, since last upgrade gives your missiles seeking ability. Keep in mind though that unlike mortar, CC will always damage you if it detonates in point blank range.
Fire Bellows allows you to quickly dispatch of groups of weaker enemies like squirts, plus it slows enemies down, which helps if you are fighting jumping armored frogs.
My secreat skill choice was very poor - mirror shield - which did not help at all. It is too short and enemies don't attack frequently enough for it to be useful. Should have probably used something like Fire Carousel.
Barely survived the last wave, first I killed the poisoned dart shooter with CC, then rolled away from the spear guy, trying to roast him between the blocks, but in the end I managed to push him off the level, which greatly simplified things.
The Kid's Dream is easiest of all, completed it with musket + mortar, but I am pretty sure it can be completed with most weapon combinations.
For Zulf's Dream I think a carabine + mortar or pike + mortar are the best choices.
Damage over Time weapons combined with Leechade basically means you never have to get below half-health. Mortar to do the damage to actually kill the enemies.
Obviously, it really helps if you have all the weapon upgrades.
That was my set up for zulf, zia, stranger. I was using the calamity cannon for the kids, but found that the salf damage and imobility killed it later on.
The best skill Ive found is actually the brusher decoy. I reeeeeally saved me on the boss ura waves in the strangers and zulfs since I never seemed to get their block timming down. Put it on the edgeto lure the big spear guy to the edge and push him off when he gets there. You get an opening crit too, so if the push gets botched a plan B slugfest isnt too awful.
Much luck!
Yes there are. Games also often have achievements for completing the game in superhardcoreimpossible mode without taking damage while being blindfolded and drugged. Doesn't mean I have to do it :-)
Not quite there yet.
I'm playing the smoking pipe regularly with no real problems (in fact, there's the occasional 'eh? you call that a wave?') to get some money (the higher tier upgrades DO get expensive), and I think you get experience too.
Anyone interested in the Kids history? I'm an expert on that :-)
I failed the books (didn't even notice that in the first playthrough, and it was given before the pipe on the new game plus), failed the cooking pot on the first playthrough (haven tried it again since, though, and it's not yet available on the current playthrough), and haven't tried the bedroll at all.
All of this with no idols. So, it's not going to happen anytime soon, and most likely never :-)
As it turns out, using the Fire Bellows is amazing for those giant Gasfellas, considering the health regeneration.
It's been a while since I did it though.
I think I used this set-up (weapons depend on which Dream):
Mortar / Bellows
Pike / Machete
Gel Canister
Dreadrum
Werewhiskey
Graver Gimlet
Leechade
Cham-Pain
Hearty Punch
Bastion Bourbon
Black Rye
Bull Brandy
Lifewine
