The timing was well chosen. I've played a lot of puzzles with poorly-timed areas that make that section very difficult to execute. I was very glad when that turned out not to be the case.
toncica  [author] Dec 1 @ 8:19am
At the very end, instead of using the funnel to bring the cube remotely to the button into the exit room you could carry the cube there yourself if given enough time. I made the timer short enough to not allow that without getting uncomfortable hopefully.
Ganymede Dec 1 @ 7:33am
Interesting. I could not think of any way to be standing in the exit room with the cube sitting on the other side of the glass. Is this scenario even possible?
toncica  [author] Dec 1 @ 5:29am
Thanks for the feedback. When the player goes through the portal from the exit room he lands in a pit to make sure he doesn't have time to get the cube from there inside the exit room before the timer has run out. Additionally the portal is "upside-down" to prevent a ninja player from being able to land on the ledge instead of dropping down into the pit and throw the cube back through portal in under a second. It would be a crazy and almost impossible move but I want to to make sure that this has no chance to succeed.

Well, I feel accomplished.

I don't know whether I was lucky or if this is simply an easier puzzle than your others, but I managed to make it to the end in one sitting without any hints. It's the first puzzle since "In The End" that I haven't needed any hints for. That said, the ending had me thinking really hard, and I had to do a lot of experimenting before the answer was apparent.

The only questionable thing I found in this map is an "upside-down" portal behind the fizzler / laser grid. For whatever reason, every time you place a portal in the exit room it's always upside-down. The green detector that reverses the funnel was new to me, but I assume it was just another BEEMOD toy I haven't tried out yet. And I really like the way you use timed funnels in your maps (to center cubes and such). It adds a touch of polish I haven't seen in many other maps.

A great map with very few unconventional moves. Nice job!

Did nother 'ride' and have to admit that the last steps are, indeed, very important to this map; did the intentended way this time, very nice chamber design and nice simple fix.

@dire.fcs, wow I can't believe I missed that. Fixed, thank you!
dire.fcs Nov 28 @ 12:52am
Huge well designed and tough map; I think the last steps to exit were not intended: I was able to shoot a portal through the side platform to the panel behind fizzler and laser barrier in the room where the last cube must be.
macko68 Nov 18, 2013 @ 1:09pm
Can`t believe this is a simplified version. I played many maps including Chanders and Jonatan hardcore and belive me "difficult" rating for this one is not an exaggeration. Of course it`s not "Seven Gates" but what it`s great is that at the same time being difficult it`s enjoyable. No ninja tricks. Excellent work. Kudos. Will play rest oy yours
toncica  [author] Oct 18, 2013 @ 5:42pm
Excellent, very nice playthrough. It was basically 100% intended with small variations. I never land on the ledge behind the funnel but I see it works very well too. It's fun to watch a different style when it doesn't break the puzzle. ;)

Tough map to figured out, but I did a 2nd run thourgh dem. https://www.dropbox.com/s/vw14gewjpdptmk1/lost.dem

There were many times I had the first cube placed and I took the second one to almost every other place I could reach. I could get to the final chamber just not with the cube. The solution is obviously the only way and I could not seem to see it. No big deal. I had a lot of fun and ain't what we play for. Thanks again. Will be enjoying some more of your artistry.
kimist108 Sep 21, 2013 @ 1:00pm
Oh, I enjoyed the map! I use F6 a lot because of trying out stuff. I save when I am pretty sure that I am on the right track, or get tired of missing a jump and zap myself. I avoid maps that require a great deal of dexterity. You should know that there are players who don't see that clearly laid out solution. Cough 'me' Cough.
toncica  [author] Sep 21, 2013 @ 9:27am
By continuously mentioning F6 you make it sound like the player is always in danger on my maps. I believe that's not the case. Trial and error suggests there's randomness and guessing required, but there should always be a reliable solution to a clearly laid out problem available. Not sure if your comment is supposed to be negative or positive or if you enjoyed the map.
kimist108 Sep 21, 2013 @ 9:18am
WHEW! Again, a lot of trial and error and F6. That top chamber had me stumped until I went away and came back the next day.
toncica  [author] Sep 20, 2013 @ 5:04pm
I can assure you that you solved far more challenging maps than this one, it must have been something different like having a continuous blind spot, I know how that feels from my own experience. What was it that you missed?
stormsend Sep 20, 2013 @ 4:21pm
Each time I came back to this game over the last month or so I was more convinced that some players are in a different league than me. I have enjoyed all the attempts and I came very close a few times. After reaching the same point today again with no enlightenment, I broke down and watched a video. You are a master in my humble opinion. I don't know if I ever would have solved it but I'm glad I tried (and tried ...). Great map. I will continue to try your other maps. Don't think I'm ignoring them it's just that I haven't solved them yet. Several are in my queue now. Thanks.
toncica  [author] Aug 10, 2013 @ 12:15pm
Thanks. Well, the map is huge indeed. But the puzzles aren't as tough as on most of my other maps, so it should be balanced in that regard I think. You're the first to express dislike for this version. In the demos it seemed like you were getting angry. It's the first time in a long while (or ever?) that you couldn't do an unintended solution. Maybe it just doesn't feel right to you leaving a chamber unbroken. ;)

My blindrun (in two parts): https://www.dropbox.com/s/6qm7x9tom4nb3d9/lost.dem https://www.dropbox.com/s/r4bh5y8uq9mtckp/lost2.dem (total time about 55mins) by the end of the first demo I was feeling very lost, not sure what to do or where to go. I eventually figured it out, but the map has too many elements for my liking. I think I solved as intended.

ok.
I have been doing further experimentation with the gate I showed you a demo of.
it will be a full map, with a secret twist.
something I have never seen in the basic editor before.
the downside is it is unavoidably noisy.
so you might hate it.
I have managed to quieten it some already.
may be able to do more ?
still loads more editing / testing to do.
but coming along.
toncica  [author] May 30, 2013 @ 11:26am
Well, in PTI chambers there is still music when you enter the chamber, only after loading inside the chamber it's definitely gone.
mood3rd May 30, 2013 @ 11:08am
toncica
yes, that is what I mean.
you still get sound effects & hear changes in the puzzle.
I had not noticed music still playing.
if the other sound is at maximum, you can turn your speaker volume down,
which may stop you hearing the music ? maybe not ?
toncica  [author] May 30, 2013 @ 9:42am
You mean turning the volume of the music down to zero, I see no other option to turn it off. I always had it turned down but I can still hear music playing.
mood3rd May 30, 2013 @ 9:00am
toncica
you previously said the reason you quicksave & quickload when starting a portal map.
is because you find the portal music distracting.
I have gone into the options & turned the music off, while leaving all other game sounds on.
I just thought you would find this easier.

I have explored your question further in the editor.
& came up with the following:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=148348442
let me know if it is clear enough.
or any good to you ?
& when you have finished & I will unpublish it.
you could use it on a future map if you want ?
toncica  [author] May 26, 2013 @ 3:25pm
Thanks for trying this map. As you may suspect I updated the detail I was talking about yesterday, not with the zero gravity version but with a normal funnel.
From your screen shots everything looks fine, you left the companion cube in the upper level which is correct, or else you wouldn't even be able to travel back, you can now forget about the companion cube and the upper level, there's nothing left to do there.
The fizzler going off is important but don't forget about the rest of the map you have access to. Getting into the exit room from that side is impossible, there is another way though.

looks like another of your maps I am not smart enough to complete.
I did the following:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=148105466
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=148105520
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=148105583
but I am as your title says "lost" at what to do.
I don't even know if I left the right cube up top.
when the fizzler went off, I thought I should come down to the last screenshot.
but have no clue now.
I have previously played 'Lost in Testing' but failed at that as well.
what I have done, I have found impresive & well thought out.
so much so, that this is the 1st map I have given the thumbs up, without completing.
you are a good make maker, as well as a good player.
Light Apr 30, 2013 @ 9:20am
i didnt see a way
toncica  [author] Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:55am
It looks like you didn't take the other cube which you had in the first room.
Light Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:40am
that is the cube i had :/
toncica  [author] Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:37am
You need both cubes there, you can bring one with you when you walk over the light bridge, the other cube has to stay in the funnel to block the laser which gives you the light bridge, on the floor with the cube buttons you can shoot a portal through the grating down to the funnel, and have it being transported to you at the faith plate section.
Light Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:30am
i was in the part where you have a cube button behind a shut down death laser and another cube button protected by a bridge. i got the cube but then i didnt know what do to because you need two cubes there and i didnt have any and i was stuck in that place.
toncica  [author] Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:22am
I'm sorry to hear that. The last part isn't quite easy, if you didn't make it that far I'd like to know where you got stuck.
Light Apr 30, 2013 @ 7:04am
i was "lost" in this puzzle. as much as i tryed, i failed to solve it :/
toncica  [author] Jan 26, 2013 @ 3:00pm
Thanks for the video. It's amazing that every new playthrough I see brings something new. You didn't use one of the portal surfaces and I like that even better. So I'm gonna remove it.
May I recommend to you the maps by Juggler, I think you're gonna like them. Not enough people have played these well made maps in my opinion. For example this one: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=104393765

I truly enjoyed all the moving pieces in this one. I'd love to show you my blind playthrough, but after I got the first cube on the X button, I spent an awful lot of time trying wacky stuff. I didn't figure it out until after I went to bed. So when I replayed it today, I recorded that (with minor flubs edited out): Lost (Xmas edition) playthrough.
So now you have another entry in my collection of Favorite Puzzle Maps.
Andi Jan 21, 2013 @ 2:52pm
Happy to help and I'm glad you liked the video. This is my kind of puzzle, one in which you have to think about what to do next, that's were I tend to do very well. I don't do so well on puzzles that are timed or where I have to perform a ninja fling, that's not my strong suit. This chamber was right up my alley and I enjoyed it very much. Nice job.
toncica  [author] Jan 21, 2013 @ 2:08pm
Awesome, thank you! Watching your playthrough was very satisfying. You acted calmly, processed all information effectively on the way and almost never made a step in the wrong direction. I received a lot of good advice apparently, which made this formerly rather obscure map into an intuitive puzzle. There was a last minute surprise, literally. You were able get back into the exit room through the portal after you brought the cube there with the funnel.I overlooked that possibility when I cut a laser field from the exit room. I've added it back now. It's only a marginal deviation but one that bothered me.
Andi Jan 20, 2013 @ 6:53pm
Yes, I know. I'll get it done later but until then...

Here is the video of my solution to your chamber in 3 parts.

Sorry for the trouble you're having with the video. You do know that you can set up your youtube account to get rid of the 15 minutes limit for free? To avoid possible problems in the future.
Andi Jan 20, 2013 @ 12:35pm
Sorry this is taking so long. Having some problems getting this video uploaded to youtube. First try didn't take, second try was good but it was too long (30 minutes) so I cut it into three parts and it's uploading now. Should be up by tonight.
toncica  [author] Jan 18, 2013 @ 2:50pm
Sounds great. Looking forward to the video. Fingers crossed there are no bad surprises. ;)
Andi Jan 18, 2013 @ 2:17pm
Great map. I really liked how everything seemed to mesh together. I'm pretty sure I solved it the way it was intended. I'll post the video as soon as I can.
Distant Jan 15, 2013 @ 7:01pm
The uninteded solution apears to be fixed. Great map.
toncica  [author] Jan 14, 2013 @ 5:00pm
Updating the map right now. It's also noteworthy how that flaw came to be. I replaced certain portal surfaces with flip panels. They never flip, but the good thing is they have sort of an automatic portal placement. In some situations it's handy, or else the player might experience trouble if he didn't shoot the portal to the middle of the surface. The flip panel on that area made it necessary to move the laser field away from the wall, thus leaving enough space for you to do what you did. The devil's in the details.
toncica  [author] Jan 14, 2013 @ 4:49pm
I knew there was something that wasn't quite right. My subconscious kept bugging me about the alignment of the laser field but I didn't listen. Thanks for pointing that out. :)
It just shows how important it is to bring someone in with an unbiased view.
Distant Jan 14, 2013 @ 4:35pm
I did find two things worth noting: I never used the pressure switch at the bottom of the map that deactivates the fizzler near the exit. I can see what you wanted the puzzle to be, but I found it unnessesary as I just carried the cube in myself without using the funnel. And I'm not sure what the point of the laser fence at that location was, as I was able to reach the switch to deactivate it from both sides of the fence. I'm guessing you wanted the fence to keep me from carrying the cube through the way I did, which can work if you move the switch out of reach and make a safe way around the lazer that runs through a fizzler (to prevent me from backtracking with a portal saved forward of that point in the puzzle).

That gave me a good half hour of fun, so I'd call it a success. And thanks again for helping me with my own map.
