Survival: First Chapter

Description
Announcement: The mod is no longer supported. All its content will be available in Survival: Last Stand, along with the new Fading Embers characters and locations.

                                                   --------------------------------------------------

Full-fledged scenarios starring new characters, with a few gameplay changes making the game less forgiving overall. All new characters are playable in both default and custom scenarios.

                                                   --------------------------------------------------

- Up to six characters at a time in your shelter instead of four, making the decision to accept more people less obvious. You still have the choice to play as usual, refusing anyone else.

- The game doesn't tell you exactly what can be find at each location; you have to keep track of the things you leave behind (percentage of items left is still there to guide you).

- Crafting high quality meds requires more med ingredients in an effort to make them more valuable. Single cooked meal requires less water to make it a bit more useful.

- Franko the door-to-door trader does not come so frequently and won't carry so much valuables, like food or medicines, to encourage trading with other NPCs.

- New 'Survival' scenarios, with harsh starting conditions, colder winter and more frequent attacks:

       - Liam, Katia and Anton: Early extreme winter, brutal outbreak. War ends in five to six weeks.
       - Zlata, Arica and Kalina: Early outbreak, long and harsh winter. Lasts four to five weeks.

Both scenario have been designed from the ground up and are significantly harder than the default scenarios, without being unfair. The second one is much "tamer", but can still be a challenge.

- Alternate "Second Chapter" scenarios with different starting characters and events:

       - Liam, Marin: Winter only, cold waves and heavy conflict. War ends in five to six weeks.
       - Julian (solo): Empty shelter, harsh winter and extreme conflict. Lasts five to six weeks.

These scenarios are very challenging, more than in "Survival: Second Chapter", and are not recommended for a first playthrough. Both don't have a specific set of locations for replay value.

- Other scenarios are not affected and are all unlocked from the start to give you the possibility to play the story you want, even a custom one, and still get all the changes done in this mod.

 - Anniversary Edition's new locations are available by default. They are picked randomly, same way as they were before.

 - And a few other changes, like dwellers recovering less easily from exhaustion/depression and being more affected for killing soldiers, visitors giving less rewards, and the heater needing to be upgraded first before making another. Check this thread for a list of all features.

 - New playable characters: Alternate faces and names for Marko, Pavle, Bruno, and Roman, alternate portraits for Katia, Iskra, and Ivano, new pictures for them on the selection screen, and 19 new custom portraits, replacing existing ones (optional pack).

They are featured in the new 'Survival' scenarios, and are also available to play in every other they are in, might that be the default ones or a custom one you made.

 - Cleaner portraits overall: Fixed contrast, removed "old photo" effects like black ink drops and cracks on most portraits and tuned down the in-game effect. Comparison: imgur.com/a/EgKUkFb

 - New endings events: All quests have one, and they all appear more consistently than before.

 - Fixed quite a few typos/errors found in the game (English only).

*All the portraits used for this mod were taken from the game files and are property of 11bit Studios.

                                               --------------------------------------------------

Current Status: Mod no longer supported to focus on Survival: Last Stand and Endless War.
v1.6 "Last Stand" Release — Only compatible with The Last Broadcast build (5.1.0).

UPDATE: It's almost March and the mod still hasn't been updated, but never fear it will be in the next few days :steamhappy: A new chapter is also in the works and will add a new character and all-new scenarios every two months or so until the last Story dlc (two on release, more afterwards).

It doesn't work now

ooo that's how, I didn't look into the mod folder yet. Thank you for answering me! I'm having some though about making a mod of this game for a while now, and your mod is inspiring me to do it.

I can make custom characters, but it didn't come with custom background so I'm thinking about modifying the original characters like you did instead and changing their bios as well.

Well it's pretty easy if you got some basic editing skills. All portraits are in "Mods\<mod id>\textures\ui\characters\" when extracting the textures in Storyteller.

First, you need Paint .net to convert the portrait files into .png or .bmp, then edit them with GIMP or wathever program you use normally. Since all portraits are 512 by 512 pixels, you can configure a 512x512 grid to replace them very quickly. I only used portraits that were already in the game files, making new ones takes a bit longer if you want a good result (black and white effect, vignetting, ...).

Once you are done, you just have to re-convert them into .dds and repack the mod.
You can use this portrait chart here [i.imgur.com] to know who you are replacing. Good luck!

O neat, this mod would add more challenge for my returning to this game.

I have one question about modding the game with Storyteller tool, how do I change portraits of original characters like you did? I'm able to change the name and bio, but I have no clue on changing portraits at the moment.

UPDATE: All the scenarios have been ported over to the latest game build. I'm now working on the localization (name changes, ending events, etc...). It's pretty much only copy-pasting at this point so I'll finally release the update tomorrow :steamhappy:

Then I'll see if I can add some of the features from the dlc to this mod, like what I did in War Stories.

UPDATE: I finished working on the new dlc story, so I will soon start porting the scenarios back. That way it will finally be compatible with the latest build. ETA: 2 weeks

Looking forward to it, Kierk. Will you be implementing the new characters and locations, as the season pass unfolds, if possible?
