The hillside and forests surrounding the town of Duclair offered a dramatically strategic location both for attackers and defenders; those attempting to attack the town were overlooked by anti-air weapons, and those attacking the hill were faced with reinforcements streamlining into the battlefield from Duclair itself. Across many engagements, the hill and town changed hands, for the battle of Duclair could never be won until both were held at once.
