Battle of Iwo Jima February 19th - March 26 1945. The Iconic Image of the Marines raising the US flag over Mount Suribachi was taken on February 23rd 1945 at this battle. General Tadamichi Kuribayshi leads the Japanese defence. Kuribayshi had been to American and believed "America is the last country in the world Japan should fight". Of the 22,060 Japanese defenders only 216 were taken prisoner. Yamakage Kufuku and Matsudo Linsoki would continue Japanese resistance untill surrendering on January 6th 1949. Takeichi Nishi was also killed in this battle, he won a gold medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic in Individual Show Jumping.
