This game is like if you took Quake and Doom and made it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FAST. NO reloads NO ammo NO long ass start up or follow-through animations, it's just GO. Even the enemies you fight, bosses included, support the gameplay. Ultrakill has a habit of teaching you the basics and then quickly shifting gears; throwing enemies at you to see if you understand the mechanics, climaxing at the 4th level of each layer. This is probably best shown in layer 1: Limbo.

After playing prelude, you're expecting a quick jump into combat, but instead you're met with a calm, serene setting, where the game teaches you to play with the red and blue skulls to open doors. And once you get past that, it tosses enemies into the mix, getting harder and harder with each succeeding encounter until 1-4: Claire de Lune. Calm, serene. Same thing, the game teaches you about attaching multiple skulls to one door, requiring 3 to open it. you then encounter a common trope in gaming: I'm you but better. This is the games first skill check, essentially. you've been given all the tools you need to survive. Can you do it?

Once you beat that, every layer is an advanced version of that, new skills, new guns, new enemies, new tech, you make discoveries on how to play as you progress, and with each new thing that appears, more depth is added, you are expected to adapt. You might not! You don't have to! But it is highly encouraged, rewarded, and just looks really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool.

Ultrakill is one of the few games that truly deserve a 10/10 across the board.
