Review + first 10 min of gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNiQa_Skzag

Inside is the new game by Playdead, the creators of Limbo, a minimalist puzzle-platformer that I truly loved. For this reason when Inside was released I couldn’t wait to play it and clearly I had very high expectations. I can already tell you that my expectations have been exceeded. Inside is very similar to Limbo in many aspects but it’s simply better. Inside is platformer where you control a young boy in a dystopian world and all you have to do is to run and solve puzzles while trying to survive. Puzzles can be very simple like moving some boxes or levers but you will also find some that are more challenging. In one case I even had to google the solution. Beside that extreme case though, all puzzles can be solved pretty quickly with no frustration at all.

Playdead doesn’t tell us much about the plot. There are no dialogues, instructions or guidelines during the game. All you know comes from the gameplay and even after finishing the game you will still have some doubts. I loved this approach as it gave me the opportunity to make my personal judgement on why that little faceless boy ended up in a story bigger than him. To avoid any spoilers I can only say that you are in a dark world where technology is used for evil purposes and people live enslaved and brain-dead.

This creepy scenario is beautifully represented by minimalist and almost monochromatic graphics that creates a unique atmosphere of anxiety but it’s so marvellous and cinematic that will make you wow all the time. “Cinematic” is a key word as you really have the feeling of being in a movie; this is also due to the supreme usage of the camera. Often I just stopped playing to appreciate the beauty of my surroundings or of some animations. In that sense, it reminds me Another World, epic game from ‘80s. The sounds effects and music also stand out. I still remember the sound of my footsteps or of me jumping in the water and the music during a change of scene. I’ve played Inside during the night wearing my headset and I was totally dragged into that world.

Inside is a great game but also a beautiful piece of art. I strongly recommend it to any type of gamer as it’s a gaming experience that you won’t forget.

Things I liked the most:

+ The atmosphere, that feeling of worry after each step in this dystopian world

+ The graphics, minimalist but so detailed at the same time. Really a piece of art

+ The underwater levels. Especially the part of the submarine

Things that could be improved:

- Duration. It’s only 2-3 hours game. Not a big problem for me but I can understand that it could be too short for many gamers

- Variety. I would have loved more outdoor levels

It's like playing on LSD. Hard, dirty and addictive. I rarely finish games but I did this one...even if it's sometimes a bit repetitive
