Let me start off the review by saying I’m a huge Jurassic Park fan, as a kid I watched the movies countless of times and played a lot of the bizzare games made back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. (Jurassic Park Danger Zone anyone?) Anyway, as big of a fan of Jurassic Park as I am, the games for the franchise were usually mediocre, while they were definitely fun, they never cemented a place as one of my favorite games, that was until JPOG. Yes, the game that most people think of when you talk about a good Jurassic Park game is JPOG, it wasn’t the first park builder tycoon game made for the franchise, (that honor goes to the Jurassic Park builder on the gameboy) JPOG was a game that was perfect for the franchise. A park builder where you design your own personal Jurassic Park was an itch scratched by JPOG for countless hours. Alas that game is ancient and as much fun as it is, we needed a remake/reboot. In comes Jurassic World Evolution! (This game has Jeff Goldblum in it so it already is my game of the year.) Jurassic Park Evolution is sort of a reboot of JPOG but they are making their own version of it. The gameplay is excellent and engaging, has stunning visuals (this is one of the best looking games I’ve seen in awhile). Although the game is relatively new, there are some major bugs that plague it. Some of the ones I’ve encountered are: Camera panning on its own, contracts that have no text, being stuck on a contract page because the game doesnt register my clicking, tranquilized dinos not waking up, the game telling me my photo of a dinosaur has no dinosaurs in it, and some other ones. Although most of these bugs don’t happen often thankfully, they are still there but I’m sure they will be fixed in the coming weeks. Another problem is the small and horrible landscapes of the islands. On most of the islands you are given very little space to work with, which makes it very difficult to make your own Park they way you want it. Combined with steep slopes (the second island is ridiculous) its a horrible experience that restricts creativity and the longevity of the game. I hope that they will patch the game to allow more space because trying to get 5 stars on some of the islands is far too difficult with the restricted play area. This game as you may have already guessed has different islands that you must build a park on, some of them are from the movies and are fantastic but some are new and still pretty neat. There are five islands to build on ranging with different conditons and difficulty. (The eastmost island is very atmospheric and is quite the challenge.) If you played JPOG and loved it, this is the game for you, although I suggest waiting for this game to get better because as it is it feels like it was rushed, and some things that should be in the game are missing such as: carnivores attacking park rangers, carnivores coexisting with herbivores, lethal takedowns, park visitor personalties, first person in Jeeps, walking around the park in 3rd or 1st person, more dynamic sandbox with much more options, doors on buildings dont open people just walk throught the closed doors, dinos in herds/raptors working together in packs, etc. Although some of the little things that this game has that I like are: different Jeep skins, functional radios i.e they play music in the Jeep, when there is a tropical storm all radio communcation is staticy, you can take control and actually aim the traquillizer rifle in the helicopter. these things help make the game more immersive. All and all 4/5 for the time being
