Very pretty and well designed game. If you like it casually, you won't really mind the length as you should hopefully appreciate all the work that went into the polish and the art of the 6~ hour first run through. However if you really it, and enjoy NG+ modes and nohit challenge runs, you'll find even more to love.

ENDGAME SPOILERS

Can be a fun game until you get to the end. The final boss is basically a checklist to make sure you're incredibly overpowered or have a some kind of way prepared to cheese it. Really, have so much as one weakness, and the Flagship will use it to tear down your hull to nothing. I had a fully decked out arsenal, pre-igniters, maxed cloaking. My one weakness might've been my modest crew size of 5. Then, my gunner is mind controlled. Make that 4 crew. 2 Humans board. Well, it's hard to get away without piloting the ship in the final fight. 3v2? Seems it'll have to do. Just gotta keep trying my best plugging away at the Zoltan shield. It's a bit tougher when I have to keep my weapons from taking damage when an enemy combatant I both don't want to kill yet need to constantly fight is in the same room as them. Ouch. A wayward rocket in the medbay while cycling injured fighters in. Goodbye crew member. Oh boy. 2 more humans boarding. No use in trying to man the blast doors, they're right on top of me. Just gotta vent them out into space. Now let's fix up my weapons. Here I am with 2 crew with a silver of health left each. Could I possibly finish the fight? (cue power surge just after I cloaked to avoid a barrage)

In case you couldn't tell, no. I didn't finish the fight. And legend has it, the salt remains in the heart of this review's writer to this very day. Or not. I'm writing this at 1 AM just a few minutes after it happened. It sure feels like it'll stick with me for a long time though. Maybe I'll upload this review, if not just to relive the bad memory the next time I wonder
"Wait, I 've reviewed games on Steam?"

That reminds me. This is supposed to be a review, not a blog to vent about my shortcomings in video games. FTL fun if you delude yourself into thinking that luck isn't the main deciding factor in runs. You always know deep down that it's something of an elaborate gamble. Sooner or later you'll remember, and it'll lose some of its appeal in gameplay. You'll see all of the beaconevents before too long, and every conceivable dramatic, emergent comeback or situation will occur to some degree if you play a bit longer. Once those lose their charm, it becomes harder and harder to come back to. At least it has for me.

I suppose a ten dollar indie game doens't advertise infinite replayability, so you know what, I'm going to begrudgingly reccomend it despite coming in here to fervently denounce the game with the hopes that maybe my spite would be resolved if I was lucky enough to see the positive review percentage drop by a digit following my submission. I've had a lot of frustration with this game, but I think overall, if I look way back to 2012 (when good indie games were released on Steam on a regular basis, if anyone can imagine that.) I've gotten more out of it in fun than what it has taken from me in the form of torn out hair and swear jar change.

This game is not what it seems. No, I don't mean because "aaahhhhh oh my gosh you thought this was a cutesty rpg but actually it's really DARK and NIGHTMAREFUELY omg the dev's a genius no one has ever done that before!!!!"

It probably seems like that. It's not that. Maybe it is that, but that's not the most important thing about it. That's sort of the 'gimmick', yeah, but that's not all the game is. The music is great and every single track fits the tone of the writing perfectly. It doesn't have lame characters that it tries to force you to care about to make you sad when bad things happen. You care about them because they're written incredibly well and you actually LIKE them. The somewhat repetitive combat never actually crosses the threshhold into not being fun, because even the enemies are charming, and even when that's not enough, a new mechanic comes into play to keep things interesting. There's a permeated sense of detail for every single thing in the game. It's all this cohesiveness that makes you like the world, and the fact that it eagerly welcomes you as a part of it that makes you care about it. There's no mistakes or shortcomings that serve as unintentional 'fourth wall breaks' that mess with immersion in the world, so when the game deliberately messes with your view of what the world is, you really feel it. It's really a work of genius that's more than the sum of its parts, and the sum of its parts is a lot already.

You may not like this game if you just don't like RPGs whatsoever, but otherwise, I really can't think of any reason why you shouldn't buy this game. Even if you hate fun and just want to kill things, there's an option for you. Be careful though. I'm sure you don't want to have a bad time.

A buggy, terribly optimized port of a buggy, terribly optimized decent game. Self mutilation is a far more consistent way to live out masochistic fantasies, at least then you tend not to fall through the world/ spin around in place forever. The multiplayer is better too, just grab a friend and go at it, rather than having to spend an hour waiting for a summon sign to show up and then getting invaded by someone who you can't even tell if they're hacking or lagging and dying immediately.

this game will give you suicidal thoughts

but it will also keep you too busy to actually get around to killing yourself

overall a great timesink for when you already want to die but would rather kill some time first
