This game does a very good job of making the experience for the 2 players feel very different, which is something I always love to see in any multiplayer game. There was quite a few different puzzle mechanics, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome with any of them, moving along to the next concept at a fun pace. I dug the gimmick, it was very entertaining.

I think this is a very solid recommendation for anybody looking to spend a few hours playing something with their friend/partner/sibling/whatever.

One thing I really wished I had known going into this game was that there are four paths in the game, with varying degrees of linearity, and you choose which one you're going down very early on. Perhaps it's different in other playthroughs, but I felt as though I wasn't allowed to play how I wanted to play, with every choice presented to me resulting in the same outcomes.

I could accept that as a storytelling necessity however, if it weren't for the fact that the game just kind of abruptly ends. At the end of Act II you are given something that seems like it will change how the game will be played and open up a lot of fun options. About 30 minutes later I was seeing the credits roll on Act III, having only fought a single encounter.

I really wanted to like this game, I didn't hate the writing, the combat was serviceable, but ultimately I was left quite underwhelmed.

I have played a lot of SRPG's that have claimed to be inspired by FFT, but this is the first one I've played where the feeling of the gameplay is actually similar, rather than a developer just trying to cash in on the brand recognition of FFT.

It lacks some of the depth of FFT, but I feel like as though 6 Eyes Studio has helped mitigate my disappointment with that by including a lot of much needed quality of life improvements. Most appreciated is the XP share system they have, so that progression in any job tree never really felt like a chore. I'd still have preferred more elaborate job trees to play around with, but I can appreciate the streamlined approach they took given the pace of the game.

The art felt weird at first, but I quickly found myself not bothered by it as it became more familiar.

The plot was serviceable at best; it gives you a reason to see the next scene, but I was never particularly pulled into the story. I also didn't find any of the characters very interesting, there's not much to them, and what you do get never really had the impact I would have wanted. I feel as though this game could have benefited from more inter-party dialogue.

Still as a whole I enjoyed my time with the game, I feel like it mostly accomplished what it set out to do, and while I wouldn't usually let a game slide on its gameplay alone, I did pick this one up because of its gameplay so I gotta go ahead and recommend it to anyone else who's considering it for similar reasons.

I'll be upfront, I can see from the patch notes that some of my bigger criticisms with this game are being addressed, but as I played before the 1.07 patch I can only speak to my experiences.

I played this game multiplayer with a friend, which I've read increases the likelihood of issues, and this was true for me as I frequently encountered bugs. Many of which would lead to player death, or worse remove me from the game and all of the items I had on me causing a loss of progress that is not an enjoyable feeling. This game played and performed like it was still in Early Access, which is annoying as I held out about buying it until now because I did not want to play an Early Access game.

I played through those bugs though, and had fun enough for a time, but the gameplay loop did little to keep me invested. You go through the research trees fast, and they offer little in the way of changing up what the gameplay is. Vehicles seemed to be a focus of a lot of the later research opportunities, but operating vehicles in this game was a chore as most planets offer little in the way of drivable surfaces and there were times when the rover simply didn't want to move unless another player got in first.

By the time I got to the endgame, all I could think was, that's it? I personally felt little drive to wrap up what research was left as I'd already done all that the game offered, and while the terrain tool might be fun for the more artistically minded, I just didn't feel much incentive to continue expanding my base when nothing from that point on would lead to any real sense of progression.

Early Access Review
If you're on the fence about whether this game is worth the 20 dollar investment, just look at the hours played of all these reviews. If you like what you see you won't regret the purchase.

Undertale's greatest weakness is that it's a hard sell from first glance, and the crazy amount of hype around it only seems to drive people further away from it. If you're not turned off by the visuals and combat you can view in the trailer, then I'm fairly confident you can have a worthwhile experience. Opinions are subjective of course, but I loved the writing in this game. It displayed a level of depth that I feel has been missing from many modern JRPGs that have fallen into very anime centric cliches.
