Early Access Review
Somewhat challenging gameplay with plenty of possible and confirmed content to be added. Fun with friends, just mute your discord audio and use the in-game voice for maximum spookiness. Only complaint is some challenges not completing or being completely reliant on ghost behavior to complete (i.e. dirty water).

Early Access Review
After seeing the first early access build a little under 2 years ago, I quickly hopped on the hype train and purchased the game. The early versions of the game were buggy and had little content, but I engrossed myself into 15 hours of what I thought was completely enjoyable. Now, a little under 2 years later, I cannot say I share the same sentiment of joy.

[This next section is a rant about a specific experience I have just had, skip this next paragraph if you don't want to hear me complain]

My problems begin before I even am walking around yet. When creating your character, you are given the option between different classes, each with varying amounts of points to allocate through a sort of skill tree, except the "skills" are for unlocking the ability to craft objects. These are separated into 3 categories: Engineering, Combat, and Science. For some reason, key items are placed into this skill tree in ways that you can be unable to unlock them. One of the first items you're told to create in the beginning of the game is a Furnace. Except I had allocated my 45 Combat points to other things, so I was left unable to craft the first, and arguable most important, item in the game.

This is ontop of many 'updated' things that only detract from my experience, namely:
  • The confusing U.I.
  • Movement updates to the player as well as monsters
  • A constant and nausiating blur that is present even with Depth of Field turned off (might I add that the game is unplayable with it turned on, don't do it)

In the current state of the game, I have to give it an overwhelmingly negative review. I wish there was a way to revert it back to the state it was in 2 years ago, because it was honestly a fun experience.

While this is a fun arena-type shooter, I am going to have to give it an overall negative review. The core mechanics of the game are fantastic, and most of the gunfighting is fun. I have two main issues with this game that ruin the entire experience though:

1.) Connection problems. Not that I have an issue connecting, it's that people from Taiwan can happily connect to US servers with over 300 ping (Not racist to people from Taiwan, there was a guy in a clan called Taiwan with over 300 ping in my last game). In a normal shooter game this might be acceptable sometimes, not in an arena-style shooter. Most of the games I played the MINORITY of people had less than 100 ping. It can completely ruin a match for me.

2.) Grenades. Grenades are probably the one thing that kills me the most in this game. If you see the grenade indicator, you already have lost 50 HP. If the grenade lands ontop of you, you're dead and you have no way to escape it. So when groups of 2-5 people keep spamming grenades down one of the many tiny hallways this game has, it just leads to a frustrating time.

If they fixed the connection issues and (I'm not even joking) removed grenades entirely, I would wholeheartedly recommend this game. Sadly, I cannot.

Just briefly playing the game, one major flaw I've noticed is the inability to shoot vertically. This means if any enemies are above or below, you can't hurt them and instead have to weave your way around to be exactly horizontal. This breaks the game for me, as the enemies don't have to follow suite and instead can kill you from any direction.

Risk of Rain is one of the most fun experiences I've had in video games. I've spent countless hours, and I'll spend many more in this game. The most important concept to learn is that you will die. Once you realize that, one can spend their time getting a little bit further and further. You can find what character suits you the most, you'll eventually figure out what each ability does, and you can learn to love the game more and more. Multiplayer/co-op is also extremely fun, though you have to port forward to play online with your friends.

tl;dr, Risk of Rain is game that is very difficult, but if you love pixel textures, rouge-like games, and light (morbid?) humor, pick this game up.

Edit: This game earns my Steam nomination for The Test of Time award. It's gameplay is honestly as mesmerizing as the day I picked it up. Definitely worth it.
