Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is like the younger brother of games like Commandos and Desperados. The younger brother who beats the older ones at literally everything.

A samurai, a ninja, a thief, a spy and a sharpshooter are sneaking around enemies' green triangles and trying to upset plans of conspirators against the Shogun. Each one of them has their own unique abilities and means to lure enemies, stun them or elliminate. The whole story is divided into 13 missions, in which you've got to complete the tasks with those characters, and it's for game to decide what characters are to use in a certain mission. All crew castlings are justified by the plot, and, unlike the other games of this genre, you most likely won't complete the mission using only one character.
The game provieds a lot of different situations and ways to complete your mission, so even if you're stuck somewhere, you can always try to do it from another angle. There are not so many different types of enemies in the game, but it gets more and more complicated with the number of them, with the way they're spawned, with those annoing civilians, who'll never let you just go through without sowing a panic among everyone around and with enemies who can only be killed by a certain character.
The ususal stealth gameplay used in Shadow Tactic's ancestors is now quite wider. You can use the environment (even cows) to get rid of your enemies, travel around the map faster and find a shortcuts. The way it is all arranged is meant to let the player make their way to the target as easy and as entertaining as posible without a need to learn the whole map. The game itself isn't really difficult (even for those who'd never played such games before). And its settings always allow you to make it harder in case it's too easy for you.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is that very game you liked in your childhood, but it's better, modern and, since nobody makes games like this nowadays, it's definitely worth a try.
