It's roguelite Pacific Rim chess. If you enjoy turn-based strategy games where you sometimes spend 15 minutes on one turn scratching your head and wondering what the optimal moves are, this game will suit you well. Just keep in mind that, like FTL: Faster Than Light before it, your runs will sometimes be at the mercy of RNG.

It's old, and the developers don't seem to care too much about it anymore, but it's still a great game.

this is the best game abandoned by both the devs and the players you will ever play

legitimately fun with friends, even if very small as a game. worth grabbing on sale with a group and having fun

Man, what a blast from the past. This game was so much fun as a kid, and having a chance to pick it up again outside of the browser? It's great.

Captain Forever and its derivatives offer hours of good, frantic fun. The game is built as a cold, harsh environment where you have to scavenge and adapt, fighting tooth and nail to keep yourself going... and alive.
Sure, the game's age shows a little sometimes. It's not the most polished experience of all time, but considering its roots as a flash game from over ten years ago, it has held up surprisingly well. The graphics and audio are simple, but stylized, and the atmosphere they help build really helps sell the hostility that the universe you're fighting in has for you.

It's not that expensive, and it's definitely worth the price. Give it a shot, and if you enjoy a challenge, you'll get your money's worth of fun out of it.

It's a great game, and the amount of work that the developers have put into it without asking you for money to play is incredible. Solid recommendation, as long as you don't mind accidentally making a few weeks of your time disappear.

I've decided to re-do my review in 2021, in light of the current state of this game.

For a bit of context, I've played this game since circa 2010, for a good 5 to 8 years. I have many more hours in it than my Steam profile shows, due to a non-steam copy.

I would not recommend you buy this game now. It is past its heyday. The community is all but gone, and there are next to no servers being hosted anymore. The people who play this game nowadays are playing it out of nostalgia, perhaps getting on with a few friends who share similar memories.

That being said, it's not as if this game has nothing to offer. It's a fairly solid core concept, complimented by one of the biggest add-on collections I've ever seen for a game. If you can find a few players to play with, and search through the archives for just the right combination of save files, builds and addons, you can host a server yourself worth hours of fun. You can host many of them. If you're this kind of person, you will find plenty of value in the cost of this game.

I do recognize that most people would not be willing to go through this much effort to play with people they already know. As such, I would not recommend you buy this game now. Chances are, if you're someone who would be willing to go through the trouble to enjoy it today, you already own it.

Of course, a game with such a dedicated following wouldn't go quietly into the dark. There are a number of related fan projects, some of which can be found on the game's forum. The most developed of these is Brickadia, a sort of spiritual successor to Blockland, in open alpha as of this review. Even in its current state, it has quite a bit to offer, and is where you will find most of Blockland's still-active players.

Spiral Knights is a great game with a serious grinding issue, but unfortunately its time has passed. The community is not active anymore and the game is no longer in active development. The servers are still up, and it is still fully playable - you can have decent fun if you can get a few friends together. Otherwise, though, I can't recommend it anymore in the present day.

it takes a while to get something big done, and it's a bit badly optimized at times, but it's a lot of fun.

also, the demo is the full version, you guys. cmon. it's not that hard to figure out.
