What in the world is this storyline? Holy hell. When the characters are just talking about objectives and tactics, it's fine. However, every time it focuses on 'character development' it's just cringey melodrama. None of the character focuses are interesting and they take up most of the cutscenes. The gameplay is OK. There are a slew of issues with the units.

The last time I bought a collector's edition, I got Dawn of War 3. Now I buy the collector's edition of this game, and get... well... THIS. I feel like I'm cursed.

So long as modding development tools are released and usable, this will probably get modded to something closer to the old homeworld experiences. I look forward to that and whatever else the modding community may have up its sleeve. As it is, buy the remaster. It's a better experience.

Congratulations, Helldivers! The tyrannical scum threatening to split our forces has been routed!

We can now focus our attention back to the front lines, where bots and bugs await the spread of democracy!

How do I say this...

There's something decent here. There's clearly the makings of a good game in here, but even after all this time, it's still very evident that it's unfinished, and that ruins the experience.

Over a year later. I can still see the flames and smell the old, burnt garbage from the dumpster fire.

There were very few ways in which this game actually worked. The portions that actually held up were in art design. The promotional team responsible for the cinematic trailer and the art teams responsible for the in-game assets and real world assets (such as the collectors edition box with the box design and the banners) all did their jobs either fantistically or, at the very least, captured the feel of the W40k. The art design in game is a bit cartoony, but it is acceptable because of the aforementioned reason. Everything else is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to hell and back.

The gameplay design is a mess, animations are wonky in places, units don't mean anything since they just amount to controlled cannon fodder, the voice acting is all over the place ranging from 'passable' to 'why didn't they do a retake?', and, the final nail, the game has nothing that makes it uniquely stand out that isn't a negative. This game did nothing to advance this genre in a positive direction and actually threw away most of the positives that games like this had put into play, including facets that existed in previous installments of this very franchise and were made by the exact same company. It threw away everything that had been shown to work and replaced it with nothing that did.

The campaign is, by far, the biggest disappointment in this entire thing. This has to be one of the worst campaigns I have ever played. Definitely the worst when comparing it to other major companies and their products. The campaign is, essentially, one giant tutorial, with every mission introducing new units with the sole focus of that mission being learning how to use those units, taking away any freedom that you would otherwise have with the gameplay, forcing you to walk down various hallways of game design. The story is uninspired. The voice acting is sub-par. The only good portion of it is the cinematics, but even that gets screwed up a bit because the animations are near non-existent, but the art style captures the universe perfectly that that aspect became passable because of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ art team again, the only section of the studio that seemed to have had their ♥♥♥♥ together during production.

I wanted to like this. By the Emperor, I wanted to like this, but nothing about this game piques the interest. It's just boring and uninspired. I bought the collectors edition of this, so I had no way to refund it, otherwise I would have. The one upside to this whole thing was I got some cool stuff to put on my wall which, didn't completely make it worth it, but I came out with something I liked.

Good god, the voice director for the story was asleep at the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wheel. Otherwise, solid game.

You know, I came into this game expecting less than what I got. It wasn't a base building, 'send out ships and have them fight' RTS that I'm used to. Instead, it has customization of ships before battle with a variety of different game modes that are randomly chosen in the solo skirmish mode with epic battles between ships of colossal sizes. I am thoroughly enjoying what I paid for, surpassing all expectations I had for the game. I've clocked in 20 hours on the beta alone.

The gameplay is fantastic, with each race having it's own strengths and weaknesses. Each race presented so far is beautifully represented with their ships. The abilities constantly mix up the combat. You rank up and gain access to more ships as you progress. The campaign, from what little they've shown, is undoubtedly going to be fun.

This is truly a gem of a Warhammer 40k game. This is the first videogame I've encountered or even heard of that does Warhammer 40k space combat, and it is a beautiful representation of it. The first step into this realm is a glorious one and one that I have been waiting for for a long time. Thank you developers for all the work you've put into this. I have a feeling I will enjoy this game almost as much as I enjoyed Dawn of War.

Just make sure those modders have some tools to play with in the future. It's never a bad idea. Hell, it's kept Dawn of War and Sins of a solar empire going for quite a long time :)

Solid content addition. No complaints outside of bugs that are being squashed as the developer finds them.

Liked it better when it was real time, but whatever.

I swear, half the top rated reviews are from people who frequent 4chan.
