The cat slept next to a robot musician playing a tune and was purring. I must protect and take care of this good boy at all costs

Early Access Review
I killed my fellow crewmember then ate their flesh because I was hungry... then I found out that I really like the taste of my fellow man.

Honestly I was quite excited for Doom Eternal leading up to its launch but after finishing the campaign I feel more disappointed and frustrated than anything. There's a lot of good in Doom Eternal, such as its combat loop and overall presentation. The game runs super well, I didn't come across a single crash, and the wizardry pulled by Id to get the game so well optimized is something to be commended.

Yet, there are a lot minor frustration design decisions that hold back the game from being truly enjoyable. For starters, the map designs really are not all that well designed when compared to Doom 2016 and leads to a lot of frustration when looking for certain secrets (I'm a completionist, so I tried to get as many secrets as I could in my playthrough). Along with this come several VERY hard difficulty spikes in certain encounters that had to make me change the difficulty from 'ultra-violence' to 'hurt me plenty' in order to actually progress in the game. Certain enemies are also just straight up not fun to play, most notably the Marauder. This bastard doesn't even follow his own combat rules more often than not, and makes it really hard to properly fight. On almost every fight involving the Marauder I had to take a breather just because of how frustrating it was to actually get through.

Story wise, its alright but VERY fanservicey which I almost feel detracts from the story because of how hard it tries to cater to fan theories and whatnot. Combine this with an unsatisfying ending that is very obviously sequel baiting, I left the game rather unhappy when the credits started rolling.

By no means this is a BAD game, but rather just disappointing and not worth the full price of admission. You should wait for a sale before picking this one up.

Day 25.

Low food. Low fuel. Need to survive.

My group has stayed in this decrepit home of ours for 25 days.
We WILL survive.

I send Katya out to scavenge at a small house, an area untouched by the fighting.
She enters the home and is greeted by an elderly couple. They are frightened.
They scream as they think Katya will end their lives and run to the upstairs to hide. They beg me to not take what little food and medicine they have since the old woman is sick. I feel an urge to just leave them be, but no. My group NEEDS the medicine and food. WE NEED IT.

After pillaging the house from food and medicine, I wonder about my actions. My character becomes sad from her actions and others try to comfort her, guilt panging through her for many days.

God this game makes me feel like ♥♥♥♥.

First off, I have to say the game has a remarkable atmosphere. It's dark, gritty, and it isn't afraid to show what a civilian's perspective of the brutality is like. You make hard choices that affect your groups' mentality and attitudes. You can scar NPC's in the world emotionally by killing their family member or spouse. Basically, each choice you make in this game has huge consequences.

Secondly, the crafting and scavenging of this game, while well done, is quite tedious at first, but then I understood WHY it is tedious. It reflects the scarcity of ingredients and items in a war-torn, blockaded city. I almost felt hopeless at some points in the game with food running scare many times, fuel depleting rapidly without upgrades and bandits trying to attack my home just so they can get the neccesary ingredients to survive too.

Third and finally, the characters themselves of the game, while not too deep, are remarkably likeable even though they don't really speak other than just text boxes. They interact with each other, they offer things to each other such as comfort and support and items. They feel like living people in a very realistic world. At some points, I was almost crying because of my character being broken from killing too many innocent people. He felt hopeless and I did too. I questioned my logic of "It's the best for us" or "It was neccesary" when I gunned down someone or stole from someone.

tl;dr
The game is an emotional rollercoaster with unique storytelling, atmosphere and gameplay mechanics. One of the very best games I have played in... ever!
