At it's core, it's not an awful game, though it lifted a lot of elements from other shooters (namely CoD). Shooting feels good, and stealth feels very cohesive, interesting, and fun. But it doesn't take long for progression to start getting incredibly sluggish, and the time investment to get to where you can effectively experiment with playstyles and builds feels almost arbitrarily inflated, especially when compared to Payday 2.

Thing is though, I could overlook what blatant bloating there is if I could actually play the damn thing. Many people were, to say the least, displeased by the always-online proposition. Servers going down is a common "what-if" in regards to always-online, and Payday 3 proved it a valid point. Waiting an hour to get into a single heist only to get booted during it is simply unacceptable. I'm not sure what convinced them this was a good idea, and until offline is possible - or the servers are at least ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stable - this ain't it chief.

Play Payday 2.

Buy it.

Simply put, this game is fantastic. Instead of talking about what I did like, it'll be shorter if I talk about what I didn't like.

Levels can sometimes be too long
A few levels just seem to drag a little longer than they really need to. Not that the combat isn't fun or engaging, because it absolutely is, but two levels back to back I needed to take a break because they went on for so long.

No manual saving
This is somewhat tied to the above issue. There's no way to manually save your game. If you quit the game, you go back to your last checkpoint (or the in-between mission hub, if you get there) which doesn't feel great. Even if manually saving could only happen between missions, it's good to know for absolute certain that my progress is saved.

Dialogue isn't great at first
The quality of writing feels vaguely Forspoken-y for a bit at the beginning. It eventually evens out as gameplay becomes more engaging though.

That's it. Everything else about the game is absolutely fantastic. There's so much polish and love put into everything here and for a significantly lower price than standard AAA games. The visual style alone was an instant sell for me, but everything comes together so awesomely that I don't think I'll stop gushing about this game for along while. Thanks a bunch for not marketing this game ahead of launch Bethesda!

I respect the hell out of RWS. Instead of buckling under the controversy their first game caused, they doubled down and made a sequel so stupidly offensive you'd have to be an idiot to take it seriously. When the sequel to their beloved cult classic turned out to be utter rubbish, they pushed support and DLC for Postal 2 for years to make sure fans didn't have a sour taste in their mouth. And with the most recent entry, they not only brought in huge new voice talent, but every single previous Postal Dude as well, even Zack freaking Ward. It genuinely feels like RWS sees the series as more than just a title they can milk for steady cash. The fans love the series for its tastelessness, and RWS respects the fans enough to keep their communal trash fire burning as long as it can.

That said, Postal 4 feels less like hot garbage and just regular garbage. I played this during early access, and I was excited to see the game shape up as development went on. As soon as 1.0 launched however, the load times were simply too much; quite literally for my PC, most times. If the game didn't crash on level transitions, my computer did. Killing things too quickly would make the game lurch almost audibly, and I often fell through or got stuck on level geometry just by walking wrong.

Optimization is far from the only issue I had. Gunplay feels incredibly stiff, only really just passing a "usable" mark. Melee just feels wrong. The story is . . . well, Postal. The biggest offender though has to be the open world. It most certainly is very open, with most if not all buildings having some way of entering, but about 80% of the time there's no real reward for searching those buildings unless you REALLY need a couple pistol rounds.

Maybe RWS are pulling a big brain commentary, making their most recent game offend gamers by just not being very good. Maybe I'm an idiot expecting anything technically solid when Postal 2 was held together with duct tape and offensive jokes. Maybe RWS will give Postal 4 the love they did Postal 2 and in a few years it'll be damn near perfect. But "maybe" isn't enough for me to recommend this game.

Wait and see.

Bonelab is a perfect example of why the simple "yes or no" recommendation system on Steam doesn't do some games justice. Many people (myself included) were expecting a meaty campaign like Boneworks. That's simply not here. And based on the attitude from the devs, that wasn't really intended to be here. Stress Level Zero wanted to build a VR successor to Garry's Mod, which I feel is yet to be seen.

Whether or not the game can live up to being a VR GMod is up to time, and if people with the will to mod decide to actually do so. The game leans VERY heavily into the idea of creating instead of just consuming, both with the campaign's narrative and requiring you to interact with the mod station to continue the campaign. So it feels weird to say Bonelab is or isn't worth it for the mods, since the mods don't really exist yet.

But until those mods exist, the game should stand on its own. And it kinda doesn't. The campaign itself is about 5 hours long, assuming you don't run into any game-breaking bugs. The body physics feel buggy and inconsistent most of the time. Just about the only thing that feels like an improvement over Boneworks is that ledge climbing feels a bit better. Gunplay feels similar-ish to Boneworks, though aiming with rifles and shotguns is iffy at times with the new body collisions. The most unique feature Bonelab brings is avatar switching. Different avatars have different stats and handle significantly different from one another. The game tries to introduce them as if to say "you can switch whenever, to whatever is best for the current situation" and as soon as it gives you all the avatars and introduces a level that could best demonstrate that, it's Pillars.

Once more mods become available I might change my review, but for the current price tag, and in comparison to Boneworks, it doesn't feel too worth it.

The sniper is fantastic, essentially an upgrade to the Contractor sniper minus the silencer.

The SMG is just not good. Doesn't perform well against other SMGs, and nothing really unique about it.

The biggest reason to buy this pack though is for the assault rifle. Decent enough stats, but it comes with an underbarrel grenade launcher and is endlessly useful. The only other assault rifle with a underbarrel grenade launcher is the Little Friend, which sadly can't be bought anymore.

tl;dr
Excellent shotgun - Reloads two shells at once
Decent SMG - A good bullet hose, if you're not swapping a lot
Very good pistol - Always silenced, launches bodies

Argos III Shotgun:
The Argos is a blast to use honestly. The biggest draw for it is that it reloads two shells at once, except when reloading from empty. When you ARE reloading from empty, the first shell feels like takes slightly longer, but the rest of the shells go in lightning fast. It has rather high base concealment - second highest of the shotgun secondaries - but other than that it's very similar to the Locomotive stat-wise. The exclusive set looks neat and gives you three laser pointers which is rad.

Wasp-DS SMG:
Not too bad. Decent punch for an SMG and great ammo economy to boot. It's also the fastest firing SMG in the game, though this comes at the cost of it being hard to control even with 90+ stability. Good accuracy means it can also be used in single shot, though with 1333 fire rate it's an insult not to use it full auto. The only major issue I have with it is that it takes so damn long to swap to/from it. I'm glad there's an actual animation and not just pulling the weapon up from the bottom of the screen, but with how often I switch weapons this started to annoy me very quickly.

Gecko M2 Pistol:
Also comes in akimbo. Using it feels like the thinking man's Judge. High damage, decent accuracy and stability, low-ish ammo and ammo economy, topped of with fairly high concealment. In short, a pretty ok pistol. It comes with two unique traits. The first is that the pistol is always silenced, even when you equip a flash hider. The second trait makes it function similar to a shotgun in that bodies are launched. It's a useful weapon for stealth and can function decently in place of the Judge if you ever get tired of using it.

At first, I thought this was a troll game.
Then halfway through, it started shaping up to be a clever and relevant social commentary.
Then I finished it and realized it really was a troll game.

Great game, simply put.

Descenders is a genre-definer. Controls are tight as a glove, visually striking environments, paths with character to match, stellar music, and random generation to balance skill and luck. Flying down hills at unreal speeds gives me the happy chemical, and seeing random other players tackle the same track as you (with Xbox crossplay no less) is great fun. The paths generated for the player can be pretty brutal at times but starting a run over is so quick the adrenaline hardly stops flowing. And to top it off, you can make your own parks or tracks in Unity and import them to ride on.
