I haven't done a review in a while. Haven't really used Steam or played a PC game in a while for that matter.

Was positively glued to this one.

If you enjoyed Return of the Obra Dinn, and wanted more like that.
I think this is your jam.

-

Difficulty:

Like RotOD, I would recommend using no hints whatsoever. Not even one. I did use item highlighting though. I didn't feel like the game was necessarily meant to be played without that.

At times solutions feel just out of your grasp, and then you get it, and it's a rewarding feeling.

Use pen and paper for anything the game's UI notes don't help you track. You won't need it much, as the game does a fair amount of this for you.

Sometimes there's a passive attempt to swerve you as the acting sleuth, but I found this to be enjoyable.

-

Negative:

Not really anything. Maybe a knock against it is that in a couple rare instances (like maybe 5% of the game) I felt like I got lucky, but it kept things moving. I think RotOD hintless did not allow much of that but it has been a while since I beat that.

Like RotOD its one of those games where I'd entertain a memory wipe just to re-experience it.

-

Story/Engagement:

I felt the story to be better than RotOD and actually be pertinent. I won't say more than that.
The style choices of the game felt very charming and unique. It all gets you attached to what is going on.

Can also recommend all the DLC. I can't wait for the 2024 'sequel'.

Good luck, and enjoy!

A challenging game that manages to be fun even when you lose. Something any roguelike should hope to achieve.

Good UX/UI and art direction. Each class plays it's own way for fresh gameplay. Multiple viable strategies, and also enemies that will force you to change your game up. If you like deckbuilding then you certainly owe it to yourself to play the best.

Don't mod until you feel like you've done everything you want to do in vanilla.

I purchased it twice, what's your excuse? Just buy it ya dummy.

An unfortunate title

In a world where there was no Terraria or Starbound, this might have done better.

But in this world, my review would merely be comparing Edge of Space to those titles, and there are plenty of those types of reviews present here. I feel like there was some love in creating this title, and to be compared with Terraria and Starbound means they did something right. Unfortunately, I played this AFTER those games and with all the content present in Starbound and Terraria, there's little reason to fart around in this game.

Maybe co-op is good, but none of my friends own this game, and its probably better that way.

Note: It's not a great sign when the message of the day that pops up at the title screen points to a 404'd url

Early Access Review
Great start. Enough content for an Early Access game to get enjoyment out of.

Singleplayer is fun.

I'd imagine co-op would be even better.

Keep this one on your radar.

Take Two's attack on modding is an attack on the livelihood of PC Gaming.

Take Two (or somebody) made it right, mods are back so I've heard.

Reversing my recommendation.

I'm afraid Take Two will take further action so for right now my recommendation is simply

"Yes"

If I could give this a neutral rating, I would.

Let's do the pro / con thing since it's more easily skimmed.

And we'll start with the Cons to put this review into neutral territory.

The Bad.

-The game is mostly short with not a lot of content.

-There's little in the way of combat variety,
and some mechanics that were intended to be used don't really work that well.

-Customization lacks depth and is mostly unnoticeable.

-Most every enemy (including bosses) can be kited.

-The first ending is underwhelming. Overall more could've involved me in the story or theme going on.

-Enemy variety is not very good.

-Even with randomization the environments are pretty drab.

The ???

-The roguelike mechanics of the game are rather unusual.

-Some things are never explained, leading to confusion.

-Artwork is so-so.

-I don't remember the music at all.

-You never feel overly powerful or overly pathetic.

The Good!

-It's kinda fun for a while.

-The death / tokens system is pretty fluid and makes the game fun.

-The randomization / death system does help break up the monotonous combat / stages.

-if you're having a poorly executed run, there are opportunities to turn it around. Mostly around regaining health.

-The dynamic camera works pretty well.

Summary

If you can grab it for dirt cheap, it can provide you a few hours of good fun.
Then you can toss it over your shoulder and never look at it again. But hey, it was cheap.

Controls don't feel as tight as they should for this Krusty's Fun House looking game.
Seems others complained about this as well.

Could use some polish before ready for primetime.

It's not Terraria. It's not supposed to be.

A good replayable roguelike.
Inventory management, path decisions, crafting, wildcard difficult enemies that reward xp.
Customization seems lacking when you start, but you unlock more starting options as you go along. Good difficulty.

cons:

¬ Some skills are notoriously useless and while you choose the skill spec, you get a random skill of that spec.
¬ Mag Dex Str specs could use more variety.
¬ Arrow pickups don't go into an empty quiver.. maybe by design.
¬ Needs more armor types!

Note that this is my first negative review

Can't really recommend this game, there are far better roguelikes on steam and this more closely resembles pacman or old intellivision games like Lock n Chase. I guess there's a time and place for that, but if you're looking for that fun roguelike where you just want one more round, this isn't that game.

Barely anything is randomized, in fact I had to read that it was indeed randomized to even be aware of that.

Character progression is completely absent and character selection is cosmetic only.
There is no 'gear', there's no attack or defend. You find an item, pick it up and use it and its on to the next one, only ever holding one at a time.

I see that there are other game modes but they are locked at start and frankly it's not fun enough for me to put up with unlocking them.

Probably unlike any game you've played before on the whole, but you'll want more like it.

What might start as aimless room to room until death.. with a goofy premise... you realize is much more complex.
Lots to do and each run feels different.
You're playing the game to unlock more items with which to play the game to unlock more items with.

Cool challenges will fit you with a certain synergy of items from the start, changing your style of play.

You might have favorite items, but certain ones will have great symbiosis and others will seem to cancel each other out.

You'll take risks with bombing walls, looking for the hidden room you NEED to possibly get a coin or two to afford that ever important single heart or item.

At every turn you're evaluating... "Will this be worth it?"...

Purchasing this game you can be sure to get your coins worth. One of the strongest roguelikes on steam.

______________
Negatives

The first area music, the boss themes and title themes are grand masterpieces...
the others seem to fall out of step with this amazingness.
