If you already own this game, then it's fine as you've already spent your money, and previously I would have absolutely endorsed people purchasing this game over something like space engineers.

What changed:
Mainly "nothing" and that's part of the problem, the game has been in an unfinished state for MANY years now, only having a "playable" story with mods like Project Eden. Now we learn that Eleon is partnering with FUNCOM, who are famous for pushing horrible monetization since their sale to Tencent.

TLDR: Essentially they are partnering with Tencent.

Straight up, this game ran fine the first day I played it. Me and my friend played for 4 hours with no issues at all, after the patch they released it crashed 4 times in 35 minutes and we haven't played since. I'm writing this review now because I was expecting some sort of hot fix as this issues affects a large amount of people but its been a week with no communication or relaying of information at all, if you want to see for yourself just look in the discussions forum, there are multiple threads and replies all stating they have the same issue.

Sold to Tencent, which is owned by the CCP, they are going full money farm scheme and implementing a cash shop and paid battlepass system to the game. It doesn't belong in this type of game where most of the people play on community hosted servers and no real updates of significance have happened to fix the ongoing bugs that have existed since the beginning of the game. They slap a new coat of paint on it once in a while with "huge updates" that only include stuff that should have existed 4 years ago when the game came out, and the discussion page is controlled like the ccp controls their people, no complaining is allowed as my thread complaining about the battlepass system and cash shop trash was locked for "trolling" which I only pointed out issues I saw with it, far from trolling.

If you find yourself wanting to play a survival crafting game, skip this one and go play ark or any number of better, more supported and updated games. As greedy as the ark dev's are (and they are because even before the game left early access they had a paid dlc) they never hoped to dream of being as shallow and greedy as funcom has become. Most of the community has dubbed them funcent in response.

Let me reiterate, there are no regular updates to this game, which used to be a decent thing because it was a pain to have to update mods every time, but they still have not fixed many of the blatant issues that have existed since this games launch. The only DLC that actually added any real content was island of siptah but it's a giant pile of trash wrapped in a "new" label. I regret ever buying it as it's a huge waste.

February 11th 2021 they decided to force people to use Epic Online Services and to have mods you have to now use mod.io (an epic owned modding site). I don't recommend spending a dime on this game. If i could refund I would. I won't be buying anything from keen software house ever again and recommend everyone else to do the same.

After lookin at the screenshots and videos, i was hoping for an experience similar to that of a monster hunter game but instead its a tower defense game. if you like those games then by all means you will probably enjoy this, but for me its not my thing.

TL:DR Don't buy the game unless you want to feel like you make a new character every time you go into a new zone.

In the years that the game sat in alpha, people were playing it and leveling up, skilling up their characters and testing weapon and skill combinations to maximize damage expecting eventually to have an update come out adding new things like classes/races/weapon types/enemies/zones. Then Lo' behold the fated beta update came out (which beta lasted all of a week?!?) then full release (seriously why didn't he just make it early access to fix this mess?).

Pro's:
Same art style, "combat" system, enemies, classes, weapons as alpha.

Con's:
Everything else.

Explanation:
The game feels like its in alpha still, like the developer wasn't quite sure how they wanted to progress with gear development so they made each zone completely ruin any progression you felt like you had. The only things to carry over to each zone are artifacts (which let's be honest are completely and utterly useless) and +1 gear which I have never found so i'm not even sure that's true. The rest of your gear becomes useless beyond compare and all of the boats/gliders/climbing hooks/saddle thing/etc disappear the second you cross a border, so if you are in the ocean on a boat getting ready to traverse the 7 sea's, forget about it unless you feel like re-enacting the little mermaid with none of the music, fun, or fast swimming.

You start next to a town (something they fixed cause my first characters were 40 minutes out from any town) as your chosen class with the default specialization and weapon equipped, you can choose to stick with it (which is the worst decision you will ever make) or switch to the one weapon for each class that doesn't utterly suck. Then you can go into the little town, switch your specialization and test it out, and probably just use that one for the rest of the game along with the weapon that doesn't suck (seriously don't use any dual wielding weapons at all, no matter the class, they suck). Welcome to the game, you are now a 1 star rank character with no armor except for a chest piece, so go hunt the weakest things you can find which all happen to be 1 star as well and finally gear up with w/e you can then go hunt 2 star things. Rinse and repeat ta-da you killed all the dungeons in the area, found the artifact(s) and discovered they are junk that do things like give you more light from your lantern..... yeah super useful stuff... Ok sarcasm over (for now).

So you spent essentially a day just making the most of this zone, and you feel like traveling the world with your boat and your glider, you feel strong and accomplished and you take that first step across the border and.... BAM you die to a 3 star enemy because you are now back to square one (1 star), but at least you can use the lantern to see the enemies before they all murder-rage you as you try to make your way to the next town so you can find clues about how to find the glider and boat and such all over again, and you feel like your character was just made new but some how worse... but at least that sword you spent 30 minutes on to make it look cool is useful right?..... right?... Wrong! It's as useful as a liberal arts degree.

So simple lesson if you are dead set on playing this game, either stay in the same zone and never leave it, or be prepared to be set back to square 1 as soon as you cross that border looking for glory.

Lots of fun even without mods, and with mods its a new and complex experience.
