There appears to be an issue with running Skyrim using Windows 8.1. C3N50R3D has done a little digging around and he finds:
Found a lot of info on Microsoft forums that indicates Windows 8.1 corrupts some OS files or they get corrupted somehow in the Windows 8.1 environment. Running SFC may have fixed some of them. There are also serious incompatibilities in 8.1 with various programs that ran ok on Win 7 and 8.

..In this Headder post below, are some essential links; Installing and using Mods for your games and if you are stuck, there are links for troubleshooting problems like CTD's,
(Crash to Desktop) and tips on better management and gameplay.
..This thread is constantly being updated and aimed specifically at helping people who are new to Skyrim, modding and/or not sure what they are doing and would like to learn and gain more confidence to either make or download mods and then run their games with no, or as less problems as possible.NOTE: Further links may be found throughout the thread.MODS:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ''Make the effort to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS on every mod at every opportunity you can''.
There are extremely important points that are sometimes raised with certain mods. And you will benefit from taking the time to read their manuals.
...I suggest you look at the tutorial links in here and then delve further on youtube into all the other vids. I seriously recommend you try to learn as much about it as you can Before you get too deep into modding...knowing what you are doing is essential.
...I want to raise a little awareness on how important it is to read the Mods' Instructions BEFORE installing your mods.Despite the appearance, Modding is not a 'plug-in-and-play' thing...it is data that must be carefully installed and handled with care.
There are readme's for a really important reason, and you need to take your time learning about the mod before
you install. You will gain the confidence then to feel more comfortable about modding your game, knowing what it is doing, and we as the community welcome you to a happy Modded Skyrim! :)
..The stuff I know about computers, fixing them, modding etc, is of a bare minimum, I just would like to point out, that a lot of the contributors to this thread AND the other unsung dudes and dudettes of this community know way more than me.
..I just decided to make a thread for ppl to come to for help, as a number of us were noting how many 'help me' threads there were being posted by ppl getting into a muddle with their game, and believe me, I've been there myself, and will find myself in need of help MANY times too. That is why I made this a discussion thread and not a guide...so that the community can contribute and feel good that they did their bit to help others as well. That's one of the benefits of having this community. This thread is an ongoing process, by you, the community, and if you find anything that you think would be really good to add to this thread
please do not hesitate to leave a comment in this discussion and if it's really good, I'll stick it in the headder and pop your name in the contributors list :)
..There are thousands of you helping others on the community, in all of the Forums, not just the Skyrim one. It really warms my heart to see that, please if there's anything you might know to help someone, don't worry, feel free to post a comment, everything and anything can help.
..Additionally, If you are stuck and wish to post a question on this thread, please feel free...I'm sure someone will try to help you, just please try to be patient, as people are busy at times and it may take a while. It is a good idea to prepare for it to take up to a day for a proper solution, though it is more common that a reply is posted within minutes.
Thank you :)

SAVING / BACKING UP SAVES
SAVE SAVE SAVE!:
It really helps to save regularly throughout the game. either by quicksaving regular stages in travel, say before and after navigating around a mountain, or before entering a Dungeon, and also making main or 'hard saves'. It is beneficial to make a 'Hard save' before you continue with a major section or journey, or Quest. F5 is also your friend people, get used to tapping it often before combat, before lockpicking, before passing through doors even! (I've had the game freezing on me many times when entering/exiting buildings, usually however, it will reload from the point of opening the door in that instance).
But after periods of time during gameplay it will do you well to make a new save at various stages in your game. You could make a new save after every so many hours of play, or after every time you level up. This just means that if for any reason, anything should go wrong, you won't have too much to lose if you have to re load the previous save.
BACKING UP YOUR SAVE GAMES.
You would be best to back up your saves by yourself. before venturing forth with modding your game. If you run into problems and need to start again, returning to before you installed some mods or whatever, then having backed up save files to restore your recent progress helps a lot, especially if you are going to load up earlier saves with new mods activated.

Are you fed up of the Vanilla menu interface? Certain features that you just wish were in there?..So was I, until I got this. It makes navigating the User interface in Skyrim a hell of a lot easier, in a more organised and convenient way. Download Link. Ver. 2.1.1:
Mod Author's Introduction:
BOSS is designed to assist mod users in avoiding detrimental conflicts, by setting the correct load order for the plugins they have installed.
BOSS also provides thousands of plugin-specific messages, including usage notes, Bash Tag suggestions, requirements, incompatibilities, bug warnings and installation mistake notifications. It supports the sorting of plugins ghosted by the Wrye *ash (Wrye Bash, Wrye Flash, Wrye Flash NV, Wrye Smash) utilities, is highly customisable, has been translated into multiple languages, and is simple to use.
LOAD ORDER. What is it?http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=t6MxLBcSgkc#t=686s
Tutorial on understanding what Load order really is, how to benefit from understanding it. Also, the 'Better Oblivion Sorting Software' tool. What is this?...explained. I personally Advise beginners to avoid installing too many mods until they know what they are doing. If you are finding yourself getting a handfull of mods in your list, it might be a good time to consider installing BOSS to help with the load order.
Gopher explains the importance of BOSS. IT IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE CURE ALL TOOL. Only you are responsible for your mods...

E N B -How to install ENB's explainedENB's are contraversial. Sometimes they can cause problems, but one thing is certain, you HAVE to have a high spec computer to handle the graphics. Downloading an ENB is tricky, and is not compatible with the Nexus Mod Manager, which means you won't have automatic updates for the mod you install, which means if there are any bug fixes, you are responsible for maintaining the mod's updating.
This tutorial link explains briefly how to MANUALLY install an ENB:
S E C T I O N 3.________________________________________
You must input this code into the ini folder, located in your program files:
From your Desktop, click on the: 'Start' menu> click on 'My computer'. Then Click through this file path:
C:\Drive (Or the drive that your program files are on) > Program files> Steam> Steamapps> Common> Skyrim.
In the Skyrim folder
, look for a file called: 'SKYRIM EDITOR'. (NOT
'SkyrimPrefs'. It looks like a page of text with a gear wheel on it on most OS's)
Double Click on this file. Once opened, you will see a massive list of code...DON'T PANIC, this is easy now, take a breath...
The 1st category says 'General'
. At the bottom of the General category, check that you see the below line of code. If you don't, then click in the space you see below the last code line, and type this case sensitive line, Letter for Letter with the Capital Letters and no spaces, (and yes, include the equals symbol too):
Now, there should be a space between that line you added and the next category title, '[Audio]' like there was a space before..
This will allow the loading of other 'active-set' plug-in files, like your mods for example, as well as the loading of Skyrim's template content.
Now, the next line to add in this 'SKYRIM EDITOR' File:
Same as with the General section, scroll right down through lots of the page to get to '[ARCHIVE]' near the bottom of the file. Then, at the bottom of the Archive section, you will look for:SResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Update.bsa
You should find this at the bottom of the Archive list. But it is missing something, I want you to make it look like this:
SResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Shaders.bsa, Update.bsa, Dawnguard.bsa, Hearthfires.bsa, Dragonborn.bsa
Start by putting a comma after 'Update.bsa' and carry on typing this. Once you've typed that line, hit [ENTER] to make one space below this line and the new section below. When you have done that, REMEMBER TO SAVE! At the top of this file, click: 'File' and 'Save' and you're done. As you can probably tell, that second line of code enables you to load up the DLC content in the Creation Kit.thanks fp :)LOADING:
...You should now be ready to use the Creation Kit with no problems, loading up your mods and the Dlc content.
...Upon clicking File> Data, then when the loading window appears, check/tick the Skyrim plug-in and the other plug-ins you wish to load.
NOTE: You will need to select each additional plug-in, one by one, as an 'active file', using the button available below the plug-in list. Hit that for every plug-in you add. IT DOES NOT SELECT THEM ALL IN ONE CLICK. Master Files do not need setting as Active Files.WARNINGS:
...Upon loading the data, the Creation Kit will also flag up warnings. Something like 'Parent space could not find data. Ignore?' ..CLICK YES TO ALL, and Creation Kit will continue to load up. Bear in mind that this can take up to a good 60 seconds to load, so there's nothing wrong with your computer, don't worry. After a few moments, you will see the contents of Skyrim populated in the object window, and you're ready to rock and roll. Please see the tutorials on how to use the kit to edit your game!....Have fun!
