What time is it?
Seriously, people, if VR takes off, I guarantee all sorts of angry girlfriends/wifes, as well as other uncomfortable situations because of this simple fact: You get so immersed, pulled in, that you forget the time passage in real world.

So. It would be great if SteamVR allowed, or even featured, a timer/alarm clock of sorts - to interrupt the experience in a non-frightening way, so people hopelessly lost in VR will get notified they are actually in VR and should drink/sleep/whatever.

This is not SAO. You still get hungry, you still feel the world around you, if your dog jumps over you with that ridiculous helmet on you will still feel the dog. If your wife yells across the room that dinner is ready you will hear her....

People need to stop thinking about current real world "Virtual Reality" as if it was the same as in fiction with direct neuronal connections that shut you off perceiving the real world, and more like just a headset with separa displays for your eyes, maybe with some build-in motion controller.

There is a clock in steam ingame overlay.
Cant see any reason not to have the same option for VR

Well, if it will make you feel any better, the 2014 IEEE conference on VR (Time Perception during Walking in Virtual Environment) has published that no difference in time perception can be detected while interacting in a virtual environment. That is to say the following,

While it is possible to trick the brain/body in it's exact location (walking a shorter or longer distance in VR compared to the physical world), there doesn't seem to be any effect on the persons perception of time.

The quality of that research is a bit.. "meh" in my personal opinion, but nevertheless it does point out that current state-of-the-art still is too far away from "perfect" immersion to even conduct proper experiments.

Of course, given that it is a new toy it will have the same effects as any other game. I can play a bunch of games for hours on end without realizing I am hunger and that there are other people which require attention.

In short, don't worry. You are no more in danger at the moment then when you were before.
