I think our PC is no powerfull in hdmi so the Vive HDMI cable is so long to transfert video signal.
1) Enable direct mode
2) Use only the breakout box for
- power
- USB
3) Open your HTC Vive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MigWitzU_oE) to disconnect the long HDMI cable (yellow) and connect directly the little hdmi cable between your PC and the Vive.
4) launch Steam VR !! with a little space :(
Now I need community to make test with me :)
a) if anybody have an HDMI repeater (to boost signal) can he test with Asus ROG G751 ? and give model repeater.
b) how know if our "house HDMI" cable support 4K ?
c) can you try this setup : your house HDMI between PC and breakoutbox (black side) AND little HDMI HTC cable between breakout box (yellow) and HTC. This works for you ? (i would like to know if it's my "house HDMI" cable witch is not 4k ready)
Thanks
I have come back to report success with ROG G751 JY. I tried another, newer mini-DP to HDMI adapter and that failed as well. So then I purchased this mini-DP to mini-DP cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Gold-Plated-DisplayPort-Black/dp/B00HNF0L2C?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
That is hooked directly from mini-DP on laptop to mini-DP on breakout box. Further details to get it to work:
1. disable direct mode in steam VR (mine seemed to automatically start in this with new cable arrangement - I don't think I had it disabled previously but I might have in my experimentation)
2. open windows display settings. For me Vive display was mirrored to laptop display now. I changed to extended.
3. Clicked advanced options and changed display from 720x480 to 2160x1200.
4. started SteamVR - it was immediately detected and working. I then switched back to Direct Mode and it was still working.
So I think mini-DP to mini-DP is the way to go. Make sure it isn't an Apple Thunderbolt cable - those won't work (I tried one).
Thank cc_sander for your comment, I have seen it in the other thread ;)
What mini-DP to HDMI cable have you test ? (model ?)
I tested a mini-DP to HDMI which support 4K :
https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00MSMLOIK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
==> It don't work with my HTC Vive (resolution 2160x1200 not disponible).
Your mini-DP to mini-DP cable seems very expansive in my country (shipping).
And I'm surprise that it works because if the problem is due to a too low video signal HDMI or mini-DP output in ROG, your mini-DP to mini-DP cable is not an amplificator, so why it works ?
other persons have been able to test this cable on Asus ROG G751?
Yuzner, keep us updated of your tests and give us models of tested cables.
Thanks steam community ;)

Neither of those worked, and it seems the one above is not marked 4K ready. The mini-DP to mini-DP cable is the only thing that worked for me with this laptop. With other combinations I could get the headset led to turn green, but the screen would be black.
Good luck!
It gave a green Led light instead of Red one, but dark screen only - turned off direct mode and only one (left) eye started to work as I said before...and of course no possibility to change back to Direct Mode by program (I thinks this pogramm should be seriously updated - too many bugs)...but found a way to change to Direct Mode using configuration file in steam folder..
Now I bougt that cable (http://uae.souq.com/ae-en/trands-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-female-cable-adapter-10473255/i/) with 4K support - waiting when it will arrive...
Your mini-DP cable is not active (no external power)
So do you think mini-DP port on ROG G751 is more powerfull than HDMI port ?
Apparently there may be various issues with laptops and VR. These include GPU performance, HDMI output, refresh rate (many laptops cannot output at greater than 60 Hz) and USB performance.

But know I do not know why even with full size of image 2160x1200 (which can be changed from setting if to turn of Direct Mode) still image is not clear (or my eyes are not in good condition)...ANd Direct Mode working now - I can turn it on and off any time....
I also have Asus G751JY and I keep having all kinds of issues with Vive. After few days and numerous of different cords/adapters I have managed to make it work today, but not in a direct mode. I am using Delock mDP->mDP cable. When I switch to direct mode, only right eye is on, showing some checkerbox pattern. Tracking and everything else works fine.
I have also tried Delock mDP->HDMI (4k) adapter, but no luck. The same cord and adapter works fine on my desktop...
Cheers,
Marcin
Cable Matters MiniDP to MiniDP 4K ready is perfect ! It is active. (thank you @cc_sander)
Asus rog G751JY has a better power by the miniDP than HDMI output.
You can play in direct mode or not.
GOOOOOO VR !
