To be honest, my game time might not justify my opinion, but I'm going for it anyways.
Because the moment I started playing this, I felt the urge to put the controller down and say, "no, I don't want to play this".
First thing is the hype surrounding the game. Many people say it's one of the best of roguelike games. I say it's the worst roguelike I've played so far.
Why is that?
Satisfaction and progression. Those are the key words in my opinion. I don't get the same kind of satisfaction playing this as with, say, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Rogue Legacy. And that is because I don't feel any kind of progression with this game. The moment you start Binding of Isaac, you get satisfaction when RNG is with you, or when you clear the game when RNG clearly wasn't with you. You get more interesting items by playing it, you progress in a sense. With Rogue Legacy, it's the same thing. When you die, you get to spend the money you got from that run to make your child fare better in the next run. Your defeated bosses stay defeated. You feel you're actually progressing trough the game.
With Spelunky, I don't feel any satisfaction or progression while playing it. Also, I'm not really the fan of the art style of the game.
