Hot take: I don't think F.E.A.R 2 is as bad people think.

Whilst i'm not going to flat out say it's better than F.E.A.R 1, since nothing will ever beat that, I still think it still holds up. Somethings are of course not as good as the first fear, but there are still things that I also like a lot about it. I still think the combat holds up well enough. The visuals are nice to look at and the new weapons they added are pretty neat....

Introduction

Currently replaying the series, F.E.A.R 2 is in every way, a downgrade from the first game, but it doesn't mean it's a bad game by any means. They turned it into a military shooter because of the Call of Duty trend at the same and even though the atmosphere and tension is still there, it doesn't compete with its predecessor.

Positives

More of the same F.E.A.R you know and love, with reflexes being the key focus once again. Gunplay is good and responsive
Using their own engine, Monolith has made F.E.A.R 2 look scarier and better, with detailed weapons and environments. Lighting is once again great and the skyboxes are a personal highlight for me, especially during the Alma segments where she's trying to take control of Sgt. Becket, the main protagonist. Nuke explosion is among the best I've ever seen, coming close to CoD 4's.
Enemy variety is decent, although if you've come out of the first game, it's very similar but there are a few new ones, such as the creepy crawlers which reminded me of the crawlers from CoD Zombies
Gore is back and looks better than ever
A cool new mechanic is being able to drop cover down for yourself. Neat but I hardly used it
Story is decent, I wouldn't call it anything special since it's just based off of the events of the vault explosion and Alma
once again, except Becket is the chosen one (we've heard this one before). More fleshed out and makes sense, some cool set pieces in here too
The Reborn DLC is, although short, provides some insight as to how Fettel gets control of a replica in order to stop Alma
The mech sections are a blast and a personal highlight for me - reminded me of Titanfall a bit
The lore bits go under Data-Net, a new menu that shows all of the intel you've collected from the game. I miss the voice messages of the first game but it's nice to have everything in one spot

Negatives

Including the DLC, this game was significantly shorter than the original. Within 6 and a half hours, I completed both the base game and the DLC on Hard difficulty. Even the base F.E.A.R was a lot longer than this
Everything about the game is a massive downgrade, from the A.I to the gunplay and scare factor. It's a shame because if they stuck to what they did best and had a bit more time to cook, they could've released something special to follow-up the success of F.E.A.R, but it doesn't cut it for me
The A.I in F.E.A.R 2 is atrocious. No more do they try to give communications on where you are, throw grenades at accurate spots and try to box you in. Instead they're all over the place and are clueless, going to random spots and shooting sporadically
Corny dialogue. During the first few moments with the squad and some parts later on, they try to do funny talk to make the situation lighter but I found it to be cringe. For a game that's made its name based off of atmosphere and tension, jokes should be the last thing anyone comes up with
Cheap deaths. Back in F.E.A.R, most of your deaths came as a result of bad positioning and decision-making that even at times when you're about to die, you can always use a med-kit to keep yourself up mid-fight. In F.E.A.R 2, this is not the case. I had cheap deaths dying to shotguns and lasers because of how strong they are and you never get enough time to use your med-kit because of how much damage they do, especially on hard difficulty
Felt too linear for my taste. Even though F.E.A.R was the same, there was always another path that gave you another way to your objective, for a flank or a booster. It feels like they dumbed it down a lot.
Final boss fight made no sense to me and felt like an absolute slog
Movement felt a bit clunky, with animations feeling stiff. There's like some sort of delay to the animations before they play and it annoyed me, especially the sprinting. You have to wait a second before the animation finishes and when you're trying to run away, you can't shoot your gun back instantly

Conclusion

Despite my problems, I still do recommend this game for what it is. It's fun, short, provides fewer plot holes than its predecessor and offers a good shooting experience. At least you can buy this game seperately. Good thing a third game wasn't made...
