First time run with a friend, finding the mod near impossible.
I feel like I’m going to get a lot of comments about “Playing the game wrong” but I still want to put this out there incase there something I’m missing. Me and a friend have been doing a lone wolf run and we just hit level 5. We spent hours in town getting every little piece of armor and best weapon we could until we were sure we could go out there and take on fights. From the get-go I feel like all our fight, including the ones at the start, have been won to pure luck and constant reloading just to make sure what we are doing goes right. I know it could kinda be like that in the main game for people but in this mod I have had every major fight go on for at least an hour easy on a good fight with a ton of reloads to boot. I guess I could be writing this out of frustration, a bit, but right now we are at a point where we can’t even move on because the only fights we have available are just a no-go for us.

Our party is as follows: I’m a Knight and my friend is a Ranger. We have had to reroll a few times due to me finally deciding that I needed to be someone with knockdown ability or we were not going to pass the first fights. So are we doing this wrong by going lone wolf and playing as these classes? Are gear is pretty dang good, we haven't been able to top it in town yet.

Quick edit: I do want to play this from start to finish, that’s kinda why I’m asking this. I really want to love this mod.

Double lone wolf is very hard here (unless you switch to normal vitality version), and also very unforgiving. There are many issues listed at https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/829837590/1290691937720302629/

Been doing a double lone wolf, but had to set up "perfectly" for it. Tactician Lone Wolf with warrior 2h + mage. Focusing a lot on willpower and grit to be able to not get cced... Still in some fights i had to "flee" with mage and go back to ress warrior and move on. Currently i'm level 5, done the lighthouse boss with this comp, pretty challenging and fun.

I reached lvl6. After beating camping thugs near secluded beach I am seriously considering switching to a full party. These thugs have knockdown, charm (not sure), stun and the fight was harder than lighthouse ghoul and Arhu's robot boss - the disables are just crazy (which makes whole fight a big gamble). Also due to crossbow rangers, they can focus you very easily. I believe for the first part of the game 2 mages could be much stronger than 2h warrior plus mage due to Gaze synergy, overcharge + staff of magus combo, double powerful summons, etc. Warrior felt close to useless cause his 10str. does not help much - the party does not have enough DPS to finish knocked down enemies fast.

So is the answer that I shouldn't have picked lone wolf to start or something?

@Alma Elma: I would suggest that you either switch to a full party or play on dual Lone Wolf on Classic difficulty. This mod is an overhaul that radically alters many aspects of the game, so the learning curve will be a bit steep for new players. On top of this, full vitality Tactician is designed to be difficult. (This is the setting that my testing occurs on, so I can tell you first hand that it's not easy.)

Personally, I always enjoyed testing with a 3-player party since I like to have an extra body in the group while using the faster skill progression of the Lone Wolf to get complex builds functioning early.

One side note: the default starting build loadouts cannot be properly considered classes or builds, be very wary using them as templates because they will not all necessarily work very well used unmodified out of the box.

I think me and my friend are going to try the Normal Tactician mod. Do you think that would be a better step for us in this situation?

@Alma Elma: Not knowing your playstyle and your preferences concerning game difficulty makes it hard for me to make a recommendation, but if the full Tactician vitality is just too much, then I would certainly suggest that you try "Normal Tactician." Try a couple fights and see if the game is still frustrating. If is, then try to reroll on Classic, or respec your characters so that they are not Lone Wolf.

Again, I want to stress that Lone Wolf is viable, particularly if you run only 1 Lone Wolf character, but it is harder to play and requires you to have pretty clear knowledge of the mod's features, so the learning curve here becomes even steeper for new players.
