Hearts of Iron IV

Total War Mod

My thoughts
First of all, this mod is fantastic. Finally, HOI is playable! I've played since HOI 1 and I keep going back to BICE hoping it will be playable with each new update but I gave up on it. The AI couldn't handle production strategies and couldn't manage a front or conduct a war in a manner that made the game challenging or immersive.

- NAVAL: Total War AI still sends division unescorted through hostile sea lanes, but it seems to be less of an issue, and in my playthroughs GB prosecutes the naval war extremely aggressively with doomstacks of BB's and CV's supported by screens. I can never get submarines from La Rochelle to the Atlantic through the Bay of Biscay without all of them being annihilated by DD's but I know the naval game isn't fixable by modders at this time.

- LAND: GB now effectively defends Egypt and pushes the Italians out of North Africa! In my Barbarossa, the Soviets made major efforts to avoid encirclements, and in October were attempting encirclements of their own. I simply could not make risky pincers with small armored corps without risking being cut off. In November, they launched a massive counter-offensive that was perfectly timed and almost shattered my front. By the end of November, AG North was in an advantageous position with static lines and occasional forward movement, AG Center was static but had to abandon an encirclement of Minsk, and AG South collapsed entirely. I tried too long to hold my gains at Dniepropetrovsk before finally falling back on a better defensive line, but by that point as that counter-offensive was stalling and the front seemed to stabilize, a new massive offensive just south of Kiev threatened a massive encirclement which I was unable to stop and I lost 30 divisions, most of my armor and motorized forces, and almost the entire Romanian army. Game over in 1941. This has never happened to me in any playthrough of HOI ever. I was stunned and actually felt physical anxiety as I realized I couldn't salvage the front. I doubt I could have won the war if I'd consolidated on new lines and kept playing. Impressive!

- PRODUCTION: The Soviets had about 25,000 fighters in service during Barbarossa as well as 19 armored divisions at full strength. ~330 divisions total. I was unable to manage even localized control of the air. GB had I believe 10K fighters and were able to force control of the air within their operational reach from British basing, bombing my holdings at will. The Home Fleet doomstack had 14 BB's, 4 CV's, 28 CA's, 4 BC's, and over a hundred screens. I built 4 BB's, 2 BC's, 2 CV's, 4 CVL's, 5 CA's, and about ~60 screens and ~50 SS's. Not sure on total air production but the Luftwaffe was impressive before being attrited to impotence. 12 armored divisions at 50/50 light/medium tanks with two battalions of mechanized inf and three motorized, and 8 motorized divisions. ~160 infantry divisions. This all by November 1941.

How did the Soviets produce so many fighters? GB as well? What is the state of the meta on resources and production, and what strategies do you guys use? I'm up for a challenge but I wanted input before I try again. I'm thinking I'll forego a navy entirely next time as well as most strategic and medium bombers in favor of an all-fighter and CAS Luftwaffe, although that is a little disappointing. I also was brutally crippled by logistical strain during Barbarossa, which is probably the ultimate reason I was unable to defeat the counter-offensive.

Great job to the mod team.

Great feedback and Im glad you liked our mod! What difficulty were you playing on and did you boost any country with the slider?

The AI is set to have limits on how much it wants to build of each plane type but sadly paradox destroyed this part of the AI now in patch 1.5, I have also slightly improved the naval ai logic in todays update, british AI now knows its dangerous to go to the baltic sea.

The AI is really competent in terms of what units it develops and its production so its recommended to go easy difficulty at first.
To win in this mod you need to think about combined arms, having just med and light tanks is not good enough. You need TDs and SPGs, also at least 2 logistics companies for a large division and probably even 3 for the eastern front which might not be viable in 1941. So try to push a lot in 41 and then really improve logistics situation while you hold out during the winter. And yea you always need to bring your artilley to crack fortifications, the heavier the better, at least bring them in to crack besieged strongholds like crimea, kiev and moscow. SS units are really strong also!
excuse me gb better in egypt africa is caaptured in 12 months when i play italie allies ar all in there +- 120 units all out of suply its worse than beor aftere that campaing they had about 17 units and still ger does not invad gb in previous games i have seen ita taken gb with the computer no no it s still a silly ai
encirkelments no wores everbody just takes the bait or they go sit some where isolate with no continous line to supply + you still put a compleet country out of supply by encirkling the capital do not occupy it so easy for japan 2/3 weeks and china can be taken in +- 1or 2 moths lol
barbarosa take polen do not give teritory to ussr so non agresian pact disolves and go in as soon as you can no allies will take it up so you have your compleet army free it s yust the same as in I'II'III

Put also my toughts here .

First congrat ... you take good things from BICE avoiding to overcharge memory for exemple by not multiplying item to much .
Following BICE devellopment i was affraid that it bring to something unmageable by a computer
or devellopment team.

If resource will be real numbers coded , ( or may be they allready are , but not parsed as it
for manufacturing needs in materials files ) ,
i feel that it may bring some possibility of amelioration.
As you put some tungsten ( or anything it may represent ) for small arms , and increase
cost of resource for many item ( at least for early one ) , It lead
to shortage in material .
For exemple Germany don t have the historic number of division for both category
( infantry , armor ) but have in all my game an huge number of figther .
Even it build some synthetic oil , rubber factory more desently than in vanillia it seems not be abble to builg enough armor than they should ( i feel that the potential shortage is on tungsten
or chromium rather than on oil as historicly = so once they build a descent number of guns
and small arms they dont have enougth potential to build even early Pz III or IV ) .
So the best i saw them do during barbarossa is to reach minsk , kiev. After as they start wars with some late it was the winter and russians conter attack .
And so in april 1942 they are on initial borders .
And in 43 russian reach nealry what they reach in 44 and often it was nearly finish.
So I think that it may need some adjustement ; it s real that this choice lead to limit in game
proliferation of division but it is some drawback.( it here that if the resource will be
real numbers coded it may provide some way to put little consumption of rare resource.
without having to reach 1 .

I feel actually than this balancing is the priority.
See you for further toughts.
