Bug Reports and Common Issues
Last updated 19 Nov 2021
Seen something that shouldn't be there? Had your game crash for no apparent reason? Here's the thread for you.

Post your report with detailed information (screenshots, save games and error logs are always helpful) and one of the devs should respond to it.

If you're running any other mods with the game, including addons that require VN, please try disabling those and playing without them. Your issue could be caused by mods conflicting with each other.
Some addons such as the Ratka Edition, which are no longer being updated, are known to have multiple issues currently. If you are using any addons for VN, please state them in your report.

Current Mod Version: 2.2.5
How to identify you're on this version: This version is the only one that currently supports 1.32.

2021 Update: A Paradox launcher update has apparently caused a new bug which happens when you try to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to a mod while the launcher is open. This can cause the .mod file for the mod to disappear so you will launch vanilla every time; the launcher will be unable to install another .mod file, so you are unable to download the mod properly.
If this happens to you and you are unable to obtain a .mod file (it is always called "ugc_684459310.mod" and is located in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/mod), take the following steps to resolve it:
1) You will need to back up some files by moving them to a new folder in another location. They are all located in the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folder. These include:
-settings.txt and gameplaysettings.txt (these store the settings you have defined, this will save you the trouble of redefining them later)
-The "save games" folder (this is crucial especially if your saves are all local)
-The "playlists" folder (this stores all the playsets you created in the launcher)
-Any mods in the "mod" folder that you downloaded manually (i.e. not through Steam)
2) You will now need to delete the Europa Universalis IV folder at Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV. Make sure you have thoroughly done the first step without missing any important local files that could be lost. Everything else will re-download itself automatically once you relaunch the game.
3) Relaunch the game and you should now see the folder you just deleted re-appear and start to re-download all your subscribed mods. Copy all the files and folders in your backup folder and paste them back into their proper positions in the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folder. If you are asked to overwrite an existing version of a file, accept it each time.
If you follow these steps properly, you should fix the problem and keep all your important local files intact. Subscribing to this mod should now properly give you the .mod file. This is the only known way to fix this issue for now until Paradox decides to fix it themselves.

Issue: When I press Play, the mod crashes.
Solution: Make sure you are on the correct supported version and not using any other conflicting mods.

Issue: When I try to run the mod, it just loads vanilla instead.
Solution: It's likely that either a) your .mod file has not downloaded yet, or b) your mod files have failed to download properly.
To see which one of these problems it is, go to Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\236850. See that "684459310" is a folder there. If it isn't after you have subscribed, your problem is b). Otherwise, right click it and go to Properties. The folder size should be more than 200 MB at least. If it is, this means your files have properly downloaded, so your problem is a). If not it is still b).
To solve a), simply relaunch the game after launching it once and in the Mods list in your launcher, you should not see a red triangle with an exclamation mark next to the mod name once you've added it to your playset and enabled it. If your .mod file is persistently failing to download at all, see the "2021 Update" above.
To solve b), unsubscribe then re-subscribe to the mod so that all files re-download. Then assign the mod to your playlist and enable it. If none of these solutions work, use the Manual Download by clicking this link - https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/mod-voltaires-nightmare.1110346/, and follow the Manual Download Installation Guide here: https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/684459310/1750106661723675557/
Note that you must re-download this when a new update to the download is released so that you can keep playing on the latest version. You also must unsubscribe from the Steam version for it to work!
Another alternative solution is to make sure no local mod (i.e not downloaded manually) is in your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/mod folder, also make sure you are subscribed to this mod and delete that folder. Then relaunch the game, and the folder should re-appear and re-download all of your subscribed mods. This is good if your mod files failed to download for any reason.

Issue: One of the addons I'm using isn't working or is causing compatibility issues.
Solution: If you suspect an addon is causing a problem, just don't enable any of them and try playing VN without them. If you still want addons that are guaranteed to not cause problems with the base mod, use only Black Borders and Small Graphics Fix.

Issue: The launcher shows that the mod is incompatible due to not having the correct supported version.
Solution: This typically happens when Paradox releases a new update for the base game. If the second number in the patch is still the same (e.g 1.30.4 versus 1.30.5), then VN still will most likely run, and you can ignore the warning. If however it's a different patch entirely (e.g 1.30 vs 1.31), VN will almost certainly not work, and you'll have to roll back your game version to keep playing it.

Issue: The mod has updated, causing my save to not work properly. How do I get the old version of the mod so I can keep playing on that save?
Solution: You can request for a manual download of the older version on our Discord server and one of the developers will hopefully respond and send you a download link.

Issue: The Stellaris Font Mod (or similar font mod) isn't working.
Solution: We're unable to make it compatible due to the vast amount of UI changes we made; therefore you'll have to run the game without it.

Issue: The game crashes when trying to open the age window.
Solution: Disable all mods that change the UI/graphics/fonts of any kind (unless it's just map graphics) and play the game without them.

Issue: The graphics mod I'm trying to use isn't working.
Solution: We can't guarantee that all mods that would be ironman compatible normally would work in VN due to the map being completely reworked. If you want to use a graphics mod that is guaranteed to work, there is a collection of them here (https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=2199645788).

Issue: A feature that was added in a recent update isn't there on my end.
Solution: What you should understand is that if you subscribed to the mod on Steam, the mod always updates automatically, but if you downloaded it manually (i.e. from the Paradox Forums), you have a local copy, and as such it must be updated manually each time. Repeat the steps of the manual download installation guide (https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/684459310/1750106661723675557/) to resolve this issue and get the latest version of the mod.

Issue: The game setup is broken in some way when I started the game on a particular date.
Solution: If you went forward in the timeline by clicking bookmarks or otherwise, do not go back and start in an earlier date! Restart the game and go straight to the bookmark you want to play.

Issue: I can't claim primitive tribes' land.
Solution: This is an intentional feature of the mod. You have to wait for them to reform their government before you can fabricate claims on them. However, you can declare war on them before they do this by either completing Religious Ideas to get a CB against heathens, declaring a no-CB war or getting claims on them through missions.

Issue: Province names show up incorrectly and some country tags are unlocalized.
Solution: Run the game using English or German language setting. This mod doesn’t support other languages.

Issue: All countries' flags are mixed up randomly.
Solution: You are likely loading in VN just after using another overhaul mod. Load in vanilla once to reset the flags, quit and then start VN again.

Issue: The game crashes at completely random times.
Solution: Please send us your save game as well as error.log, which will then allow us to identify your issue in more detail.

Issue: Some purple colored countries look weird on my screen.
Solution: Disable "Post Effects" in the game options.

Issue: The mod runs very slowly on my PC.
Solution: Try using Fast Universalis which is 100% compatible with VN (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=820151246) and follow the instructions there on how to run the game at the best speed.

Issue: The game crashes when trying to recruit janissaries through the macrobuilder.
Solution: We are looking into one, for now the cause of this bug is unknown and so you cannot recruit janissaries in the macrobuilder. You can do it through any other recruit option though.

Issue: I can't complete a mission due to a bug.
Solution: If you're not playing on ironman mode, first open the console using ` and type 'debug_mode'. Then mouse over the mission that you want to complete to check its name in the code (for example, vn_naval_expansion). Then type in the console 'mission [mission_name]' to automatically complete it. However you won't be able to receive the reward from it. If you find a mission bug, please report it so we can fix it.

No, I've been playing as Tusculum and Orange when this happened.

There seems to be a bug where electors will vote for themselves because "they have the backing of another elector", when they don't. It's problematic because it is messing with me maintaining the emperorship

On the macrobuilder, it's broken. It should be possible to recruit them through the province tab however.
Tried to download it trough workshop and also manualy but the mod wont load in any occasion. Just vanilla everytime.

I read it and followed what to do to fix it. But I'm still getting the same problem. My issue seems to be with problem a) where everything is downloaded correctly when I go into the workshop file and see if the file is above 200 MB. I launch the game with the mod ticked on and then re launch and its still vanilla. What I noticed is I have nothing in my mods folder in my EU4 folder in documents. Anyways, I stopped trying to do steam workshop and downloaded it manually and I followed all the instructions and but into my mods folder but when I start up the launcher I can't turn the mod on due to it "missing descriptor file"

Playing as Papacy and I am currently in a crusade for Jerusalem. I control the province but the event to release the crusader states does not fire. I checked the conditions with the console and it says the province controller (me) does not have the casus belli grand crusade. But at the same time the condition defender war leader (fatimids) has casus belli grand crusade is true....

Haha, update: After checking everything for a long time and finally posting the bug report here, I played again. I was in a war with Bohemia and once this war was over several crusade related events popped up, which I assume were somehow blocked/invalid by the (earlier?) war. But still no release of Jerusalem, so I managed to have it reoccupied by fatimids, occupied it again and tada the event popped. I assume the condition casus belli grand crusade is invalid if you are still in another war.

I figured out how to fix it. So if anyone is in my same situation. Just go into your documents folder delete your EU4 folder and then go to steam and uninstall the game. Re install the game, launch it and then restart the game and tick on the VN2 mod and it will work.

Not a bug per se, but a suggestion of mine would be to reduce (maybe halve) the penalty for heretic princes in the HRE I’m in the Age of Absolution now and still trying to convert the heretics, but there’s just so many it’s nearly impossible. Imperial Authority has been sitting at zilch since the reformation started, which is fine then, but once I win the league, I would expect that to improve. it has not, fun fact.

Hi, playing as sweden and one of their missions "indelingsverket" requires 2000% Army professionalism so you can't continue that tree.

Known bug, is being fixed eventually in a patch.
In the meantime, open the console and use the command 'mission vn_swe_military_reforms' to complete the mission. You won't get the reward, but you can continue the tree
