Ship Plans
Ship Types:

I currently have in my head the concept of 3 Types of Ship. Command, Exploration/Science and Combat.

Command:
'These are the Voyages of the Starship Enterprise'
These will be the Classes that have born the name Enterprise. These will have a 'Factory' Style lab (With no Construction Access) So they can gather resources from other ships and planetary sites. They will also be better than science vessels when it comes to combat, especially survivability. So you get a mix of 'both worlds' with the Command classes.

Planned Classes:
Constitution
Constitution - Refit
Excelsior
Ambassador
Galaxy
Sovereign

Exp/Science:
These ships will have 'solar panel' labs and will produce research/resources simply by their continued existence. They will probably also have 'Factory' Style Labs to be able to conduct planetary research missions and the like. (Possibly only for the larger Classes.)

Planned Classes:
Oberth
Miranda
Constellation
Nebula
Intrepid
Nova (Possibly)

Combat:
These will shoot things, you get that right? Chances are, at least for the Federation, these will all be late game ships, because they all come late in the Timeline of Star Trek.

Planned Classes:
Saber
Steamrunner
Defiant
Norway
Akira
Prometheus
(Or possibly a Lokota Class: Excelsior- Refit) [That is a less interesting shape though]

The problem with that ship is that it is part of the JJ Jumbotron version of ST. Where the enterprise is larger than the Sovereign class and that dreadnought dwarfed that enterprise, so things will just get silly. (From the Material I have found)

As for original series ships there is the constitution, miranda and oberth, the difficulty is that many of the ships are as small or smaller than the contitution and have a very similar shape style, which means they won't look much different in 2D top down. (Is there a particular ship you wanted?)

For a first go I think 18 ships is a pretty good start!

My goal right now is to get these 18 tooled up and filled in, then I want to make a couple Kilingon ships so that I can experiment and try and learn to make a custom region Lua to remove the vanilla factions from the galaxy (If that is even possible??).

Wait you mean ST Online! Doh!

I only got to the sovereign in STO, then I lost my login details. So I don't know what is on offer.

But I think 18 ships is pretty good! If I do that for the 7? Major factions, then that would be well over 100 ships.... I don't want to do that...I wish I had not done that math...

yeah someone already linked to that above you..

You will also note that this is a TOP DOWN 2D Game.... side views won't help much! :D

Also... it took me several days to make 18 ships... I won't be adding any more to the feds when their are so many other jobs to do.
