Do I need to play vanilla first?
...or can I just jump into Renaissance? I'm leaning towards jumping in, am totally new to Warlock 2 (i played a little o fthe first ages ago). I have no problems playing on lower difficulty levels to learn things.

I just jumped straight into Renaissance - had played Warlock 1 a lot and a single unfinished game of Warlock 2 a long time ago. I enjoyed my time so I think you should be fine as long as you specialize your cities. Although I found Normal difficulty a bit though, the AI expands fast - perhaps lower it for your first game.

The mod was designed so you can jump right in. And UncleYar is right -- start on normal (or even casual or relaxed). The difficulty levels were all scaled up in the mod -- more info here:

In addition, I would recommend against playing as the Dremer faction until you've got your bearings. Their economy is tricky to manage. They're more geared toward advanced players. Humans, Sylvan and Planestriders are probably your best factions for starting out.
