If auto-save was enabled and the game surpassed the number of available saves, I suspect it might make a game unstable. This is my mere speculation, though.

Beyond that, two key spells have been added/updated to really give you a sweet boost -- Prosperity is much stronger, and Prosperous Tidings is incredibly potent (and not just for boosting population). In addition, the Renaissance event that triggers shortly after turn 100 provides additional population boosting at no cost.
So this really has been addressed natively in the mod in a variety of strategic ways. Give it a try. You might not miss that mod once you begin using the native tools at your disposal.
