Playtest of version 1.1

(This is mostly my impressions as I played it.)

Extra spaces in Heart's opening explanation:
"I know something' s fishy with her and I' m determined to find my real mother!"

Also, her next line: "I know she's behind all this!" sounds like she's blaming her real mother, not Mother.

More extra spaces when you first meet Chrysyla.

It's possible to reach the west side of the first map between the chest and the path. Attempting to walk off the map doesn't do anything or explain why nothing is happening. Same where you can reach the north side of the map. Also third map, east side above path.

It's frustrating seeing chests you can't get to. (1 on second map)

Battle looks really weird. The background makes it look like my party is flying 6 feet off the ground, and we're so very tiny compared to the hornets.

I do like being able to see enemy HP during combat.

Char portraits missing from menu screen.

The shrinking potion didn't seem to affect Shinichi. Walking in the village is super slow, even when dashing.

No books to read?

Antidote removes poison twice? Or are there two types of poison using the same icon?

"This is my doge." Intentional?

The painting in Chrysyla's house (second floor) looks weird being higher than the windows.

Second slime mini-boss gave me two really good weapons. Too bad both are for the same char.

I hope one of my chars learns a cure poison spell soon.

Shouldn't "seaweed" be a key item? And the sea shell doesn't show up anywhere in my inventory.

Castle not available in this demo? Wait, what? Going south from castle gates enters the castle???

Soldiers are so much weaker than the slimes. Why do that huge quest to distract the guards if we're just going to pick a fight with their leaders anyway?

In the scorpion cave, why is there a teleporter where no one can go?

Total time to finish this demo: 2hr 17min.
Talked to all NPCs, opened every chest, searched every jar, crate, dresser, and bookcase.

General comments:
The soldiers and their general are too weak compared to the mini-bosses we fought to get there.

Too many enemies poison me. I avoided all but one of the scorpion battles and I ended with only one antidote left.

Aside from the antidotes, the only potions I used were a couple near the beginning. After that I relied on Shinichi's heal spell and the free heals when you level up.

Char balance:
Heart does good damage when she hits.
Shinichi can heal, gets the best equipment (regen shield, double atk weapon), and Karin can boost his crit chance. He could probably clear most of these areas solo.
Momo and Karin are really weak in comparison. Does the dragon breath burning actually do anything?

Didn't find many bugs, just the sign at the end and sometimes I was allowed to save when I wasn't near a save crystal (once when I was in the second part of the scorpion caves).

Kalin,

Thanks for the review. You found some things that me and my playtesters overlooked. Great job catching the walking off the map stuff!

Here's my response to the some of the things:

-Th chest on second map is reachable via Rat Hole 2 dungeon after defeating the elite boss.

-I haven't worked on character portraits yet. Sprites will be temporarily in place for the next patch. However, they will only show in new games.

-I didn't make a smaller sprite for Shinichi so he doesn't shrink.

-I could put some books in future patches. Didn't think about it earlier.

-There are 2 types of poison (normal and minor). However, they use the same icon. I'll have to look into this.

-Doge is intentional.

-Drops are being reworked so every character will have a chance at something for their class.

-I forgot to put the Seaweed as key item. Good catch!

-I'm not sure what you mean about "Castle not available in this demo? Wait, what? Going south from castle gates enters the castle???" Can you elaborate on this?

-The guards are weak and will be buffed in the next patch. As for the quest and story, the distraction takes some of the guards away so the heroes can enter the castle. Heart does not want to fight them and resort to violence. However, she ends up doing so as she loses control of her emotions.

-Poison will be nerfed in the next patch.

-Level up heal might be removed in the future as it discourages item use in some way.

-Scorpion cave? It's actually in the mountains. I forgot to remove the teleporter, but it may be used or removed in the future.

-The sign issue has been reported. I forgot to set the correct priority so it's not readible at the moment. It is the end of the demo though. If you would like to know what it says, check out the Current Bugs/Issues/Gitches discussion.

I forgot to mention in my review that I loved pushing rocks around. I always like seeing puzzles in my RPGs.

After the distraction, I tried to go north into the castle, but couldn't move off the map. So I thought I'd reached the end of the demo and headed back to the village. When I reached the south side of the map, then I was placed in the castle.

This wasn't clear in the game. In fact, Heart never says why she wants to enter the castle. I just assumed she was looking for evidence or something.

There's also no mention of where all the soldiers came from. Maybe some of the kids in the village could comment on that.

-Poison will be nerfed in the next patch.

My complaint wasn't that it was too strong, but too common. I'm not sure it even hurt my chars, because I always removed it as soon as the battle ended.

Castle entrance bug:
The castle gate is four tiles wide, and the tile second from right does not have the map transition event (or it doesn't work). This is the tile directly north from Momo when the party re-forms after the distraction. The other three tiles seem fine.

Okay I finally found the source of the problem. After the guards chase Crysyla off screen, one of them is transferred to the wrong location (likely because I copy and pasted).

Nice catch on this one! Hard to believe it was missed by my playtesters and I for the longest time.

I've been playing for almost two hours, it's a nice game. The <Quest System> has a few bugs, that I will explain here.

1. "Quest Log" writing on screen
-- four minutes into the game I noticed the yellow message "Quest Log" and it distracted me. Especially as I didn't have a quest, and the Quest section of the Menu system was unselectable.

2. Rat Lair (1st side quest)
-- the Rats in the first map section do not dispear unless you have selected the Quest. It makes for some interesting grinding.
-- Because the Rats don't dispear after being defeated it is very easy to get into loops where you win a battle and are sucked back into battle with the same rat without moving on the map.
// only rats on the first map section don't dispear though, on the second map section they do dispear after defeat.
-- the Boss Rat also doesn't disapear. But it at least doesn't reattack after you defeat it.
// Boss Rat not dispearing just prevents access to a chest I think. It continues to give EXP and drops on each attack.
// playing through the lair without activating the quest was a good place to grind, and the limited revives and potions and MP did offer ballance (in that it limited my time there).

3. Missing Quest for Shell
-- the quest mentioned about collecting a Shell from a West Cave at the Beach doesn't get noted in the log.

4. Beach
// didn't talk to Maid near entry. Used the Pentagram passage to return and talk to the Maid.
-- if you defeat the Purple Slim before talking to the Maid, the seaweed in inventory doesn't count to the quest (and is grayed out/unsuable in inventory).
// I haven't went back in to see if I can find a second Purple Slime.
// It was good that all of the monstered attacked disapeared.


Looking forward to playing it more.

Nice catch on the rats! I forgot to put a self switch in the conditional branch so that's why they don't disappear when the quest isn't accepted. In general, some monsters will return to the map when you reenter it.

As for everything else, it will be worked on later.
