Keep the familiars out of sight in the trees until you are going in for the kill. Slow your victim so your birds can deal their damage, stun, and nuke. Later during team fights use all the charges on the familiars, stun key heros, use ult for immediate fresh birds while you spam nukes off cooldown. Also early on use grave chill as an escape along with chain stunning with the familiars. Sounds easier than it really is, but once you get used to him he's a very fun hero to play and my personal favorite.
