Adding the map to an existing saved game.
WARNING
Manually modifying your savegame files can break your savegame if you do something wrong. Doing this is risky if your savegame is important to you, you have been warned! Read all instructions below first. If you do not understand what is described, DO NOT attempt. As always, before you start modifying/copying files, make a backup of your save FIRST.

  • Open your Load game screen and find the save game you want to add the map to.
  • Select the save game and look at the date the game was started. You will need to know this to find the save game files on your computer.
  • In your mods list, enable all the mods you have in your existing save game, then enable the PIE42 map mod.
  • Start a new game same as your existing save game (Apocalypse, Survivor, Builder, Sandbox)
  • Spawn in a location on the vanilla map.
  • Once you spawn onto the map, exit game and quit.
  • Locate your save game folder: On windows, usually it is found in C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAME\Zomboid\Saves\
  • Find the folder that matches the game your just started: (Apocalypse, Survivor, Builder, Sandbox)
  • Look for a folder with the date of today, this will be the save game you just started.
  • Open the folder created today and locate the map_ver.bin file. This file may appear named as map_ver if you have your file extensions hidden in Windows.
  • Copy the file (Ctrl+C or Copy from the Edit menu in Windows).
  • Locate your existing save game folder: It will have a date from the day you started it.
  • Paste the map_ver.bin file into your existing save game folder. Windows will ask you if you want to overwrite the file, choose yes.

If you have already tried to visit Indiana, you will need to delete the chunkdata files in your savegame folder from the areas of Indiana you visited. The chunkdata files are in your save game folder inside the CHUNKDATA folder.
If you tried to cross one of the bridges to get to Indiana, you will need to delete the chunk files that have the location coordinates as follows:
Brandenburg chunks: (5_20) (5_21)
Louisville chunks: (49_2) (49_3) (53_4) (54_4) (55_4) (56_4)
If you teleported to a random location in Indiana, you would need to delete the chunks from that area. I can not tell you which chunks since it could be anywhere and there are hundreds of chunks for the Indiana map. The only tip I can give would be to look for chunkdata files with coordinates in the filename that are out of sequence with the other chunks in your save game/chunkdata folder.

If all steps above were done correctly, you should now be able to visit the map in your existing save game.

Thanks for posting this detailed guide! Did everything as described and it worked out great (minus a small gap at the bridge, but I just went into debug and built over that so it was no big deal), though I do have one problem I've noticed now:

Whenever I go back to my existing base, it keeps respawning zombies in the building between logging out/back in. All the zombies I'd cleared out of the Brandenburg checkpoint are gone (minus 2-3) but for some reason when I headed home the building had zombies back inside I had to clear out. Relogged quick to check something, and when I'm back inside its filled with zombies again. Figured it was an oddity of moving the map_ver bin over, so I cleared them. But they keep respawning anytime I relog now. Any idea how to prevent this and get it back to normal?

---Edit--- did some testing, still unable to get this to work without zombies constantly respawning in my base between sessions. This was tested with a fresh saves map_ver.bin file (even found my original game's world seed and use that for the fresh save). There has to be something in the map_ver file that is causing respawns in buildings, but I can't figure this out.

I'm thinking this is probably related to the changes made in 42.09 to the z-spawn system. TIS said that savegames could have unexpected zombie spawns for savegames created before the update. The majority of the Indiana map was migrated to B42 before the 42.09 changes and I haven't changed/updated or tested the new z-spawn/heatmap system yet, as I have to re-generate the entire map to make that update. You are also mentioning Brandenburg and this area has a few map cells that overlap with the vanilla map. it's possible adding Indiana to your existing save has changed the z-spawn behavior in some of those overlapping cells also. This is still and issue I dont know how to address yet. Not sure where your base is so it's hard to comment on that.

Yeah being a 42.9 save could be whats doing it as the patch dropped during the playthrough so I backed up then updated and at the time I didn't see any issues. As for where the base was at, its at the bed and breakfast just to the North West of the Brandenburg checkpoint.

Went into debug and couldn't find a way to disable spawns in the area, did some testing and other buildings that I had cleared are respawning zombies inside too (but not out). Luckily I didn't intend to revisit most of those buildings so I'll just deal with the handful of repops inside if I go back to any of them.

I also had planned on moving out of my base as it was a temporary solution until I could clear the roadblock and get across to Indiana and base over there anyways, so I'll just deal with the occasional respawn at my temp base until I can get everything transported over to the new area.

I imagine this is pretty edge case here on this situation (both integrating Indiana into an existing save, as well as having it be a 42.9 started save) so I'm not worried about it too much at this point and I'll carry on tomorrow with the run. Appreciate the help here as well as the work you've done on the mod, looking forward to checking it out!
