Nuclear Week One (IDEA)
Not expecting this to get made, just wanted to kinda put this idea out for funsies. :)

THIS IS ONLY AN IDEA, NOTHING MORE.

__________

This idea focuses on a nuclear version of Week One, in which people don't gradually turn into zombies throughout the week, but rather the main threat is a looming nuclear war. You know things are "likely" to pop off in the next week. You don't know exactly when, but you know it's coming.

(LORE)

Nuclear Week One (NWO) starts off just like Week One; NPCs will have parties, go to work, do hobbies, etc. No police barricades around the outskirts of your starting town, nor are there any limping folks coughing up blood in the streets. Just your ordinary day-to-day escapades.

However, citizens around town will talk about a conflict escalating in Europe. Something about a "Soviet Revival", but it's all muddied information. Regardless, they know there's fighting in the Middle East and Russia's getting involved somehow.

2-3 days later, America announces its involvement in the conflict. Talks and fears of nuclear conflict erupt, and protests begin to emerge. Inflation grows. Shops close. Over the next few days, more protests occur throughout town; you see them everywhere, no escape from the protests. People spread rumors that the President is no longer in DC, and that the White House is completely empty.

Day 5, they announce unconfirmed nuclear strikes in the Persian Gulf and the Baltic. Russia's assumed to be the culprit, but the situation in Europe takes a drastic escalation; claims that World War 3 has finally begun. Protests begin to escalate into riots. A fire here or there, but relatively controlled. But the riots gradually spread.

Day 6, it escalates into a short-lived civil war. Rioters shoot at police, the military is called in, Martial Law is declared for Kentucky, and presumably surrounding states as similar reports are made via radio and television. Gas bombs dropped on civilians. Some soldiers disobey direct orders and drop incendiary bombs, setting buildings on fire. Countless people die. Power shuts off for the entire day.

Sometime around 5AM, moving into Day 7, the radios stop broadcasting. No more information. Total blackout of information apart from local. Power is restored. Governor Cal Fairweather announces that the riots have been quelled, and the military is working to restore order. Fires are extinguished, people are arrested, and emergency services work to clean up the bodies and treat the injured.

The first few hours of Day 7 feel like the worst is over. Except there's still no television or radio signals. Some citizens can't call their friends and loved ones in other towns and cities across the country. It's a total media blackout. There's a brief chilling silence, even as normalcy makes some attempt to return to the area.

Just after 1PM on Day 7, they hear it before they see it. Streaks of white cloud fly high into the sky with a loud rumble. Missiles, launched from their silos, by the dozen. Then the sounds of sirens shrill out.

30 minutes later, flashes on the horizon. The bombs are dropping.

Nuclear war has arrived.

It plays out just like you'd expect. Distant flashes, followed by one immediate blast in your vicinity if you were in a targeted town. Basements are likely to survive this destruction; surface structures? Not so much.

Once the last few bombs have touched down, players would reasonably surface to see the damage. The damage, however, isn't confined to just the targeted cities. It's EVERYWHERE. Some towns might've been spared from the immediate nuclear devastation, but the barrage of blinding flashes may have scorched the landscape, charring trees and grass alike. Some structures may have even caught fire, but for the most part, towns that were not targeted will be spared total destruction, meaning you can still find loot in stores and structures.

Nuclear winter will eventually come and go... but it will never fully go away. This is not the same nuclear world as in Week One.

The scars of nuclear holocaust are here to stay.

(Gameplay)

In the main version of Week One, nuclear winter lasts 90 days, after which the temperature will return to normal levels, the radiation will disappear, and the game will play as you'd expect in a typical PZ run, only every targeted area will be destroyed. Areas that were not targeted look no different from how they usually appear.

In NWO, however, the damage extends to the entire map. Areas close enough to a nuclear strike will see foliage reduced to charred ruin and some fires having broken out, simulating firestorms. Some windows and doors will likely be blown out as well. However, for the most part, structures in these areas will survive.

In areas not close enough to a nuclear blast, they may see almost no change apart from nuclear winter. However, foliage such as trees and shrubs/grass will gradually die and never grow back.

Also following the bombs, crops can no longer be planted outdoors, only in confined spaces indoors somewhere, and even then the chances of even a decent harvest are slim-to-none.

EMPs have fried all electronics on the surface, meaning all cars are now fried. Your only hope would be to have stored necessary parts underground (for gameplay purposes), otherwise you're walking in the dark.

Nuclear winter will last at least 270 days (9 months), with subzero temperatures and little sunlight. Unpleasant.

The horror doesn't end there, however. Going forward, all weather apart from clear weather is radioactive, and temperatures year-round are no higher than 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter is below 0 for the most part.

Anything not canned is contaminated, likely to make you sick. Any water not boiled or canned/bottled is just as contaminated. Regardless, they're your only sources of sustenance and hydration now.

Nothing grows, no trees or grass is alive. Not even the sound of a howl in the distant or a chirping bird. Just the silence and the wind.

The loneliest apocalypse, except for you and maybe some cannibals.

Oh, and maybe a few million zombies (unless you disabled them, of course).

If you survived the bombs, you'll be wishing soon enough that they killed you instead.

NWO would be, in all essence, total global end-game. It makes The Road look like a light shower. If you didn't spend the week (or longer) preparing for the inevitable, safe to say you're not gonna last.

__________

I might refine this idea in the future, but for the most part, this is what I had. Some of this already exists in Week One, but basically this is just nukes instead of zombies, and the whole world is more or less affected and surviving is a lot harder; you won't just be able to walk 100 tiles away to lush forests because pretty soon, there won't be a shred of green left.

Main reason I posted this idea is because there are 3 different nuclear-style mods and all of them have been abandoned. Nuclear war/winter/apocalypse is just something done either half-heartedly or not at all in this game, and it's so bizarre. It's the perfect game for it.

You could have spent all that time coding it instead of typing, and make your own version of a great mod.

What's with the aggression? It's an idea. I have no coding experience. Half of this stuff is already in Week One. I'm not expecting it to be made or added in. Relax and just take it for what it is, an idea.

Even though I doubt the mod author will implement all this, it sounds great!

And the song which would play during the bombing would either be a fragment of "I don't want to set the world on fire" by Ink Spots or smth like "I don't want to see tomorrow" by Nat King Cole.
Really fun idea

In fact I had similar idea about the mod, when I was considering next mod after Day One. Right now it seems more like a version of Week One with not so much novelty. There are no zombies and the lore is different. Features like poisonous food and inability to grow plants are very good ideas that this mod would need too.

Definitely! I'm always for unique mods that make the game feel like a new experience.

I'm also a dummy and completely forgot to factor in EMP attacks. Most media depicting a nuclear war tend to have them trigger EMPs just before the main barrage of nuclear strikes begins. I don't know how easy it would be to code in, but I could easily see just before the bombs start falling the power suddenly going out, and everything electronic ceasing to work. Flashlights, cars, lamps, generators, all gone permanently unless you had them protected SOMEHOW.

Week One is just a really fun mod with a plethora of opportunities to branch from it. It's the one thing I've been wanting to see from a zombie game for almost 15 years. Whatever you've got planned next, I'm already looking forward to it. :)

LOVE IT WOW

This could be a simulation of some kind of a war, slowly escalating to a nuclear war (as an option, maybe).

US' and the enemy's troops could be fighting each other on the map as the colflict would get worse, would be interesting to see that.

You'll have to survive both civil unrest AND the enemy's attacks at thew same time, before the nuke would be dropped, and it'd prob look epic and cool, even though there won't be any zombies, it'd be an interesting war survival simulation

Where exactly have you spotted an agression, my friend? I was just suggesting.
Lua doesn't require any coding experience, just a functional brain and fingers, everything is clear on intuitive level. You can even use existing mods as a base for your code.

Did someone hurt you? Are you experiencing amnesia? Or perhaps having difficulty understanding the word 'aggression'?

You can always offer suggestions without being rude. Being unnecessarily obnoxious toward a polite, completely harmless discussion is just immature. Let alone your off-topic "suggestion" that doesn’t even benefit anyone.

Hope you’re feeling proud earning all those free Steam points, won’t spare you a clown award like the others. tsk

its a good (on topic) suggestion by him why not go out and make that thing you would really like to see instead of hoping someone might do it for you. these are texts there's no way you could have judged his tone and if you read what he said in an aggressive tone then that's how it will sound. no re read what he said in a sincere nice tone and it doesn't sound mean at all. don't go projecting your insecurity's on others because you grew up in a isolated socially inept society.
Fun idea, your description is well written. I doubt Slayer would do it, but would be a great mod of a mod for someone to make
