How are we supposed to take on POIs now?
Having to chew through shields before turrets could be taken out was already tedious enough, but now the bases have big dome shields on top of normal shields, and we take damage through our shields, so hit and run tactics don't work anymore. How is a solo player expected to handle these now without either just throwing away tons of materials in repairs, or cheesing it through digging or artillery?

Decoys would be great. Not a fan of burying thrusters, turrets and cannons (let alone the CPU) and encasing full size weapons really adds to the bulk of the ship.

I'm a noobie and after finishing the vanilla missions started your mod on a medium planet. The adventure is awesome. I finished chapter 1 parts 1-3 and eagerly await chapter 2. Massive thanks ;)

I just wanted to pipe in and say while these scenarios might not be everyones cup of tea, they certainly breathed new life into the game.

And I applaud the efforts to take out the ability to cheese the AI. I want it made hard and to have to think. Otherwise it becomes an ez race to end game.

I am so glad to hear whirly bird is gone lol......I can't stop myself from laughing everytime i think of the first time i heard that strategy mentioned, do the whirlybird! lol

What I always hated tho was hitscan weapons or undodgable shots. Made using a corvette type CV impossible.

So @verm, are you saying weapons can miss now? like homing rockets? or beam lasers?
Vermillion  [developer] Dec 10, 2024 @ 1:41am
Homing Missiles have less curve and higher speed in RE2, so they're less inclined to turn and follow you sideways as you strafe. Once you dodge them they sputter off into the distance instead of chasing you until they reach their maximum distance like RE1.

Anything that's projectile-based and not homing is always dodgeable (e.g. plasma, laser, EMP, artillery), provided you are moving.

Beam weapons are always hitscan, it's built into the beam mechanic. However all (or at least most) hitscan weapons have BulletSpread which causes the individual shots to randomize their aiming degree from their intended target. So a Legacy Disruptor aiming at a turret might score an arc across your hull next to a turret instead of on the turret itself.
Legacy now have 3 types of turret instead of just the disruptors. The two new ones are projectile-based so can be dodged.

very nice, thanks for that!

Yeah. I think maybe this is a case of "No good deed goes unpunished." 8-)

Know that most of us are very much glad that you work on this, so that we can enjoy it. Thank you.

Bonjour

Evil Overlords has a certain ring to it...Sounds like the beginning to a new game studio. I like the changes to RE2, adapting to them every day by trial and error.

"Yeah, but we don't care what your or anyone's opinion is on shield penetration.". And this is where RE2 died! RE2 server population is dropping daily. And you almost can't find anyone that likes RE2. I can't believe we had to wait so long for RE2, Just to find out that they didn't add anything to it. Missions are still buggy. And they wen't out of their way to destroy what little fun was left in the game with their crappy shield penetration. They keep crying, But people were spinning their carbon ships! Who gives a rats ass how they play. You wrecked the game out of sheer spite against people that cheese POI's and ships. And alienated 99% of the players that actually play for fun. The bottom line is "Nobody cares if you got your feelings hurt by people spinning their ships". Either make it fun to play or shut it down! This is a game, Not a job. Or just keep wrecking the game. We will forget about you. I promise.

Actually, they might be remembered as the devs who saved Empyrion with RE1 and then killed it with RE2. Sadly, there do seem to be enough people who like the changes based upon posts on various discords to keep it alive with shield penetration.
There are a couple of mods base upon RE1 that have indicated them will update to RE2 without shield penetration and CPU limits. Search for Ad Astra.

I think you'll come around to the changes as they do improve the game. It feels so lame playing on a neutered RE2. Some people just can't let go of the way they played RE1 and RE1 is still there for you.
Maluga Dec 31, 2024 @ 3:06am
It looks like shield penetration splitted the community. I played RE2 for a while untill it did got boring and switched to Atlantis (based on RE1). It feels so much better, beside a few things that I realy like about RE 2, like Weapon modding and Plasma Turbines.

Anyway, we will see where it goes.
They hype about it, that its out is gone and ppl leave servers.
Still, once RE2 is moving on with more content, sever owners will start to remove shield penetration from the config files.
I know a lot of custom servers that modified their RE1 to the max.
So it will come with RE2 once it is more stable.
But we will see.
Still it is a lot of work Ravien and Vermillion do and they do it in their free time.
So apreciate their work.
Vermillion  [developer] Dec 31, 2024 @ 5:33am
One of the problems with amateur removal of shield penetration from everything in RE2 is that shield penetration is part of a weapon's balance. If you're going to remove shield penetration, you also need to buff damage and/or shield damage to compensate.
Legacy against player shields without shield penetration are half the strength of an equivalent zirax ship. The Legacy are The Big Bad, so that just makes them The Big Loot Pinatas.
It also goes the other way, in that the Positron Cannon is less effective than regular heavy laser without the positron's 25% shield penetration. Then there's all the railguns...
Dyspayr Dec 31, 2024 @ 7:36am
I was nervous when first experiencing shield penetration, but it's really not that bad. It can certainly be nerve wracking if caught by surprise in a non-combat vehicle, but adding a bit of tension to drifting through space does help keep one awake. But in an actual combat vehicle? so long as you are not just staying in one spot trading blows, the bleed through is minimal and usually spread out. It's not until you start facing end-game content that the penetrating damage is a true danger, and by that time, you should have a ship designed with armour and decoys to deal with it.

That being said, is there any way to add 'show damaged blocks' to the game? finding damaged systems through the device manager works well enough, but it would be nice to identify damaged blocks as well.
Vermillion  [developer] Dec 31, 2024 @ 3:16pm
That would be one for Eleon to add.
